Default C5 ls1 cam question

I am thinking about buying a friends LG G5X3 cam. My car is stock except headers. I am just starting to build up the car but hate to pass on this cam if it is a good for my build up. Would I get any hp gains if I put the cam in the stock motor? I also have 3.73 gears I am about to put in. Is that a good set up with those gears (currently running 3.15's)? I am new to this modding thing and would greatly appreciate any input. Thanks!

I'd at least put on headers, exhaust, intake, a tune, maybe a pulley and FAST Intake manifold if you could swing it... it's a big cam and will need a few supporting bolt ons at the very least to get some power for you. You'll see gains with just the cam but it'll be wanting some more mods to help it out.

I put a G5X3 in my LS2 with just a Halltech intake, LG LT Headers, Corsa Sports, UD Pulley, tune, TStat, and went from 350 whp to 425.

Great sounding cam and daily driven, too...

Ditto what "KMK454" said..........make sure you have someone to tune the car as well. That cam in a auto car is not gonna be very easy to tune but if tuned right it should scream. If you can pick up the cam for cheap just buy it and store it until you get all the supporting mods and dont forget your gonna need some dual valve springs and pushrods. Goodluck.

You will have to do supporting mods with that cam. You already have headers thats is a good start. You will also need springs, push rods, locks and retainers, depending on how many miles that are on the car a timing set. A tune is a must also with that cam and should be with any cam, but you can get away without it on very small cams. Also is the car a m6 or a4? If it is a a4 you will need a stall, it if is a m6 you will need a new clutch shortly after the install. What year is your car? If you are 01+ you already have a Ls6 intake and that will be fine. If not, you may want to get one but don't have to. Then you will need a gasket kit and other misc items. A cam swap is not as easy as just swapping cams.

Thanks for the input guys. Its a 98' a4. Does that cam have a good power band or is it got all it's power in the higher rpms?

Decent on the bottom and mid, but she really shines up top. She would work great with your a4 3.73 gearing. That is once you have all your supporting mods. Get the cam and store it away until you got the money to get what you need. If you everything minus heads, with that cam, and those gears in an a4 you are going to scream off the line, that is with traction. Your shifts (a4 3.73's vs 3.15's) will keep you higher in the RPMS and the x3 will love it, and so will you.

I have a set of LQ9 ported 6.0L heads I bought a while back when I thought I was going to go with forced induction. Would these work well with the cam or would that lower the compression too low?

You are going to need to mill those suckers down to raise the compression to at least 11 to 1 in my opinion. I am at approx 11.5 to 1 compression. Not sure on the DCR though

So just run it with stock heads till I can get a better set of heads or just go with the LQ9's? I dont want to go through all that trouble not to gain anything.
