Default Price gouging on the new ZR1s

Anybody see how much some of these cars are being marked up??? Do these dealers that are doing this not understand that in this economy the LAST thing you'd want to do is screw customers on a car that will be available at sticker price or LESS in just a few months?

Trust me, those who are buying that car right now are NOT affected by economic downturn.

If someone pays it, they're just as guilty as the dealer. And people are paying it. And note that MSRP is "suggested" retail, not "required" retail. I've never paid MSRP for a vehicle and never will. I start at invoice or below and negotiate from there. I already have a dealer on standby who will order a Z06 at invoice any time I'm ready to pull the trigger.

Wait a year or two. They'll drop just like the Z06 did. And it'll take longer than a few months. That car is a cash cow right now.

I agree those that can afford the ZR1 arent affected by the horrible economy or the gas. I wish the dealer took ten year posted dated checks....

Your kidding right? How can you blame a dealer for charging what someone is willing to pay for a vehicle. This is America, its called capitalism.

On the corvetteforum there's two dealers right now with threads for ZR1's wayyyyyyy over MSRP... (one is $159k)

And the ding-dongs over there are keeping his thread flush with all the "wow, nice car, wish I could buy it" comments.....

I was told long ago, "Son... a fool and his money are soon parted."

I agree that people that are buying the ZR1 probably are not stressing out on the economy to much, but I dont see what the point of paying way over MSRP is. The way car dealerships are closing right now, I would walk in with a price in mind and say take it or leave it.

And they will most likely leave it. Demand exceeds supply right now. Just give it time. When the demand and the hype dies down, so will the overinflated prices.

C6 introduction was overhyped and overpriced. Now you can get one for next to nothing.

C6 Z06 was overhyped and overpriced, in some cases over $10-20K+ above sticker. Now you can get one for $10K or more below sticker.

Selling a bag of ice for $10.00 after a hurricane is gouging, selling a sports car with a low production and high demand over MSRP is capitalism. I think production is 2,000/year, so I doubt if you will ever see a ZR1 go for MSRP, or lower.
By November 2006, the C6Z was sold at MSRP, those who paid MSRP+ were either 1) wealthy or 2) gottohaveits

this is a very simple answer... CMV.... CURRENT MARKET VALUE if people pay what they ask then the cars are worth that much. end of story

If this pans out to GM halting production of the ZR1 indefinitely or entirely, then even at their inflated prices, they're a bargain because they will become extremely rare collector's items:

ZR1 PRODUCTION TO HALT
This latest piece of data we received today does not excite us to share, but you folks have always counted on us being involved and caring to provide you the proper representation of Corvette, this includes ZR1. The ZR1 story is a saga in itself and we’ll save that for a raining day. It does us no good to promote the car in the wrong manner.

It isn't only the ZR1, I went to the local Dodge and Ford dealer and the new Challenger was marked up 25,000 and the new Shelby was also 25,000, Not as much as the ZR1, But they are all doing it.

Top Gear is doing a story on this ZR1. I was lucky to be able to check out the 3 cars they had, ZR1, Challenger and the new SC CTS-V Cad.

Love that color. My Z06 (if it happens given the state of things) will be Victory Red unless they change it for 2010.

I dare not say this over on corvetteforum.

But that rumor about the discontinuation of the ZR1 came from a suspicious source... hmm.... a stealership blog.

Gee... "How do I unload a ZR1, Bob?"
- "Simple sonny! Spread a rumor on their forum and they'll go goo goo for ga ga!"

Rick Conti is very respected in the Corvette community. Don't think that for a second. His prices are far from "stealership".

Confirmed by multiple sources:

FACTS

1. ZR1 production will be halted, despite orders to fill.
2. No known production issues that warrant a production stop.
3. ZR1 orders in the system that had build weeks just a few days ago are now showing nothing.
4. There is no official word from GM yet. Key word, 'official'. But, there is 'word' and we are hearing it.
5. GM "needs cash" (article)

Now the big question is whether or not production will resume at some point. There are a lot of mixed signals about it, but there known and confirmed facts about the planned shut down this week, the plan to lay off 70 workers, and the plan to retrain those remaining to build less cars per hour. Regardless of the ZR1 fate, Corvette production is scaling back overall.

Latest update from Rick:

UPDATE!
I would not risk my reputation or the dealerships to post something for web hits. Something is going on with the car and what I did find out today regarding the reason for the delay, I cannot post. The ZR1 is NOT being cut, just slowed…a lot!

And this no doubt has something to do with the whole thing:

The plot thickens:

http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/081009/busin...gm_shares.html

If GM ends up in Chapter 11 (restructuring), it may not be GM who decides the fate of the ZR1.
