Default First time at the track

So I finally made it to the track for the first time last night. My car is a '99 Z28 with FRA, Lid, Ported stock TB, Ls6 IM, 221/221 .558/.558 114 cam, Pacesetter LT's, ORY, Magnaflow C/B. M6 with Pro5.0 and Lou's Short Stick, Ram Powergrip HD clutch. I have 17x9.5 chrome ZO6 wheels and 275/40/17 Sumitomo HTRZ tires on all 4 corners. I set the rear tire pressure at 27psi before I went to the track.

The track is at 300ft elevation, and the temp in the air was 74, the track temp read 95.

I made 3 runs, and these were my best times:

R/T: .810
60': 2.309
1/8: 9.075
MPH: 85.39
1/4: 13.586
MPH: 112.91

My MPH was pretty much where I expected it to be, I just need traction and the driver mod. Any helpful advice would be much appreciated.

-Edit-
Oh, I did a 2nd gear burnout for all my runs, dumping the clutch between 3000-3500 RPM's. My first run I launched just over 2000RPM's and got my worst 60' time. For the time posted above I just went off idle. (stock 10 bolt)

You need drag radials to run better. Your 1/8 mile mph is low, maybe because you are spinning so much.

You both are right. I was roasting the tires through 1st, 2nd, and into 3rd. I know I was spinning well beyond the 60' mark. It felt like I was on ice half-way down the track. I'm going to get some drag radials soon, but I was wondering if there's anything I can do in the meantime to improve my traction with these lousy Sumitomo's.

Get SFCs, LCAs and a good torque arm and you will hook a lot better.

I've got LCA's and Relocation brackets sitting in my garage, just need to install them. Planning on getting a T/A sometime in the near future. Do SFC's really help in the 1/4?

Get some more seat time and your times will improve. I'm assuming this was at Capitol Raceway?? The Sumitomos will hook a little, but you have too much psi in them. I've got a set of M/T 255/50/15 drags if you'd like to try them out.

SFCs did not help my 1/4 mile time at all, however, they are cheap insurance so you don't twist your car up.

Thanks all. I appreciate the offer Goat2NV, and yes it was at Capitol. I'm going to play around with my Sumitomo's for probably a couple more weeks before I get a pair of drag radials. I have a set of 16x8 inch wheels in my garage, and I think I'll eventually put those wheels on with some 255/50/16 DR's on the rear. I don't plan on leaving too hard with them and the stock 10 bolt, I just want to get sub-2-second 60's and see where I'm at then.

general rule of thumb is .1 in the 60 is .2 in the 1/4- so your good for 12.1 with a 1.6 60 (real hard launch for your 10 bolt) aim for low 12s though

As mentioned above, the early part of the run is where you are losing the most time. 112 mph fully hooked up with a 1.6 or better 60 foot should net low 12s, but as mentioned your 10-bolt will be hating you for it. There are a few 6-speed launching tip threads in the tech section if you do a search to see what has worked for others. We all have to start somewhere, and at least you know seat time and a few changes will get you better results.

Good luck, and have fun getting new PB!

Derek
