Default First time at the track last night

Ended up getting out of work early and going to the track Friday night at Route 66 in Joliet.

Finished (for now) the car August 13th so that's just 13 days the car has been driving. First ever time down the drag strip and had such a blast it was awesome. I ran pretty decent no problems with the car other than I think me not heating my tires up like I should be.

Specs on the car:
79' Malibu
Stock bottom end LQ4
Katech rod bolts
TR224 cam
LS6 intake
P&P 78mm tb, stock Corvette 85mm maf
PRC CNC'd 243 heads with Z06 valves
Double springs, titanium retainers
SVO 30lb. injectors
Frost mail order tune
1-7/8 longtubes
2.5" Pypes mandrel exhaust, Pypes street pro mufflers
FLT Level 4 4L60E
Yank 3600SS
8.5", 3.73s, True trac, Moser axles
16x8's, 225/50 up front, 245/50 Nitto NT555rs in the rear
Car weighs 3550 with me in it as of last night

I was only able to make 3 runs in the 6 hours I was at the track, and that was going directly back to the lanes after my run
1st run
RT-.708
60'-1.968
1/8-8.28
1/8 MPH-85.66
1/4-12.86
1/4 MPH-106.99
2nd run
RT-.570
60'-2.070
1/8-8.47
1/8 MPH-84.10
1/4-13.12
1/4 MPH-105.48
3rd run
RT-.503
60'-2.002
1/8-8.31
1/8 MPH-84.91
1/4-12.93
1/4 MPH-106.11

Just looking to see if anyone has any input on my combination and passes. I'd love to get mid 12's but the runs last night exceeded my expectations regardless.

Unfortunately unless I can find a trailer and some time, I won't be able to hit the track until next year

Thanks for the kind words here's a link to the build thread on this site https://ls1tech.com/forums/conversio...79-malibu.html .

I have enough parts to build a killer g-body with a 383 gen I sbc only problem is I don't have room for another car haha. Only thing I need is a solid frame and body.

I'm thinking about driving the car to No Limits Raceway formerly.US 41 in Indiana and making some passes. I'm thinking a good dyno tune, some lighter wheels with some slicks, disconnect the front sway bar and stall it up some more. Also different mufflers and some practice I'm aiming for 12.5s without touching the engine again.

Those are all good plans. You REALLY need a tune. There is no way you should be trapping that low. My lid/headers LS1 traps 111-112 pretty consistently with a 3300lb race weight. You should be somewhere in the 11's at around 115 with heads/cam easily. Work on traction as well. How high were you stalling the converter? My SS4000 launches like a turd unless I'm foot braking to about 3400.

See I had a feeling the car had more good thing I posted up instead of just being happy with what I had.

I think I was stalling the car at 2000, but I can't be sure I was paying attention too much at the light. I was making amatuer mistakes and my foot was starting to slip off the brake the last two times when staging. I barely had any time to stall it up after deep staging the car. Definately need to improve.

Looking for a good LSx tuner around the Chicagoland area. Heard of a couple places but would like a couple more just to compare rates/shop hours etc.

PM sent. Get it tuned, bring it to a track. GLD and Byron have the best prep around usually. I was at NLR for USS on Saturday and couldn't 60' better than a 1.59.

Agreed, a good dyno tune to get the thing running good and clean and see where the 60' fall out. You are at a decent race weight, below the average 4th gen that is not trying to loos weight so I would be expecting more.

Thats why its called testing and tuning, you gotta get out there and try.

Oh and before I forget, 3 runs in 6 hours is about average for a "Street Night". You want more, you gotta look for rental days, maybe 25-80 cars max and you will get all you want. BUT with your car your going to want to try out different things, since automatics run rather consistant. Unless your going to try ditching out weight or playing with launch, you generally cant do a whole lot to change an ET unless the car has major issues.

I would think it should go mid 11s something is going on. My 83 malibu wagon with a stock ls1, 1 3/4 headers, 3.90 gears 3600 edge converter with 12.09 . It was carbed though.

Try the tires at 16-18psi, and get them good and warm. !.79 or better 60ft should be expected.

Get a good tune to go with a good launch and expect some 11 sec passes.

Awesome guys thanks for all the input. I'm gonna give Brandon from FAST motorsports a call tomorrow and see what his schedule is like. I may pull the passenger seat and rear seat out and maybe try on a set of Welds that a buddy will let me use, but I'd like to get it's full weight time first.

Well I made the hour and a half trip up to FAST. It was well worth the trip Brandon stayed a little late and helped me out. We will be meeting up at Byron on Monday hopefully to set up my shift points. I'll ask him if he can play with the shift points while cruising as it seems like it shifts to 4th gear too soon and then down shifts to 3rd again within seconds. But other than that super happy.

The baseline pull was at 304rwhp running super rich, and the last pull was at 378rwhp.

Looks like you picked up some good HP should be worth some of that trap speed you were missing. I would say you need a good drag radial like hoosier or M/T and you should get those 1.6 60fts it is capable of. Those 2 things should put you in the 11.70- 11.80 range easy.

Cool thanks for all the replies. I decided I'm gonna pass on driving 2 hours to run at the track and have the tuner go over my shift points on the track. I may join the HPTuners forum and start doing some research and pick it up and try it out for myself.
