Default Camaro SS vs. Ford Lightning

My punk azz friend just got a Ford Lightning I think it's a 2001 or 2002 and he's bragging how he will take me out now that he has some power. I have a 1999 Camaro SS stock and I can't wait untill we go out to the 1/8 mile track(Irwindale) and rip him a new one. I know that those trucks have a stock supercharger but I have the weight advantage, anyways I wanted to get some advice before laying down some cash. I've ran my car twice and have gotten I think 9.8's and 9.9's, i'm fairly new to the LS1 and have more to learn. Should I do a burnout in the pit's or just skip it? Some guy told me that since I have regular street tires that the water just gets kicked up the wheel well and drips down my tires causing me to do a possible burnout as soon as I mash it on the lights. Should I turn off my traction control? Is it better to race in OD or just do it manually starting with 1st, I have an auto tranny.Should I rev it and hold it with the brake to have a better takeoff? Any advice is appreciated, it's all going down this Thursday if nothing comes up.

Well when i raced a friends auto i skipped the waterbox and did a short burnout to dust off tires. Pulled up to lights (left car in drive), and held brake and stalled to like 1800 and eased in the gas. I raced a stock lightning pretty recently in my 99 SS with a few mods and even smoking the tires pretty bad, when i got into top of 2nd i started pulling and by middle of 3rd i had him by a few cars easy.

Good luck.

That question is what started my quest to drop in the LS1 A coworker has one and says he beats Vettes all the time, so I couldn't wait to drop in the stock LS1 and prove him wrong. Since my project has changed direction a bit, I think I'll run against his stock Viper now, instead of his truck.

BTW, I heard from other coworkers that he pulled an 11.9 up in Palmdale. All I know is that he's put a chip in. So I dont know what other mods this guy has or if they are all that fast. I did hear taht this guys first time at the track almost ended in a wreck because he was all over the place on the track.

9.8's 9.9s?? or do you mean 8.8's 8.9s...? if you are truely running 9.8's your spiining alot or something. listen to will69camaro he has it right. skip the water if your on street tires...do a short burnout to clean the tires of, but dont get excessive cuzz your jsut wasting tred, pull up to the lights and press the break and the gas slightly to load the supension should be able tog et it to about 1800 like stated above, the lgihts change and let go of the break and mash the gas, also race in OD, you cant manually shift it as fast as it shifts, it will hurt your time if you do it manually....do all this and you shouldnt have any problems running in the high eights which is plenty to beat a stock lightn ing

If you're running in the 8's 1/8th mile wise you should have no problem with the Lightning. I've dusted two of them, and they weren't even close. You do have to worry about them on slicks though, as their prolific torque makes for a disgusting launch w/ traction. On street tires, have no fear.

At 84mph in the 1/8 to run that time you just launch like a bat out of hell

not many people know this but the left lane on all 1/8 mile tracks is about 10 feet shorter.

not really, just get the one that everyone is hooking in

the last time I was at the track there was 2 lightning trucks. Both where running 8.5 to 8.7 in the 1/8 mile with there tailgates down

Not sure if they had any mods. I ran one of them and he got me out of the hole but I caught him quick. On that run I had my worse 60 foot which was a 1.98

I wouldn't put any cash up right now.

Also remember if he puts his tailgate down he WILL be even faster.

stock 99 SS against a stock 2001 lightning..................... my $$$ are on the camaro in a 1/4 mile race assuming equally talented drivers. in the 1/8th mile the race will be alot closer. if he has any kind of mods at all you would be fool to bet agianst him. i have run a 12.50 @ 109 mph in my lightning.

I must be smarter then you then with that kind of comment you made.

I have watched dozen's of trucks compare this with it up and down at the track and they always gain around 2 tenths and 1-2 mph. Its called aerodynamics. Having a tailgate up causes a drag from the wind.

Next time you race why dont you also roll your windows down also. It wont slow you down at all.

So you dont think aerodynamics makes any differance then I take it?

I have never tried to bash anyone on here and have always tried to give my best opinion from my experience's through the years.

Cant say about lightings but i've seen people put the tailgates up on the chevy 1500s in my area and run faster times than with them down...I know about aerodynamics but if you dont know how the air exits off the roof then there is no way to tell if it will help that much or hurt...

Most I have watched where older trucks and lightnings. I do have a friend that has a 1991 Chevrolet 454 truck with alot of mods and with it up he runs 11-6 to 11.7 and with it down he runs 11.4 to 11.5

That is a good point on how the air exits off the roof.

Wow the two I raced must've been really weak examples then, cause they were nowhere near low 8's 1/8th mile wise. Heck, I could only see them in my rearview mirror.

so i should loose 2 tenths from lowering my tailgate? so i could go from 12.8 to 12.6? and i have been doing it all wrong this time.

also, do a simple google seach and you will find so many articles writen about the 'separated bubble' theory its not funny. its been proven over and over again that a tailgate lowered is DETRIMENTAL to aerodynamics. not that aerodynamics plays a huge role at barely over 100 mph for just a split second with these trucks.

enjoy the reading. besides, nearly all L's come with a toneau cover. its standard issue black vinyl.
