Default Did I do my K&N wrong?

Yesterday it was pretty hot at the track, and DEAD COLD I ran a 13.87 @ 100(?) with SLP lid, K&N, SLP loudmouth Muffler, and MCT Drag radials in my 99 Formula (its ran a 13.35 @ 104). Then I took the K&N filter out and I ran a 13.61 @ 102. So I gained over 2 tenths and 2 mph. Ive been trying to figure out why it keeps running so many different times (I bracket race). After the filter was out it ran another 13.61, then four 13.67s, 13.59, and few other 60s.

Could my K&N really be slowing me down that much?

I never run with an air filter. Leave it out at the track.

Lose hp by removing the air filter? The filter is a restriction...

Ya seriously how in the hell can you lose hp when you take out something that stop airflow efficiency..

Try this for a home experiment, get a K&N filter and hold it up to your face with your hand in front of it. Now blow as hard as you can through the filter and see how much air actually hits your hand. Now remove the filter and blow, which one produced more air???

I tried this on the dyno and saw no gains.... So People personaly i wouldnt run my car without the filter its made to stop debris that would otherwise go into your motor...not such a hot idea imo even for a few runs at the track.

i gained 1hp on the dyno on back to back runs by removing the filter, so IMO its not worth the risk. BTW the 1hp gain was over a paper filter not K&N

Well I drop at least a .10 when I remove the filter every time. As for the risk of dirt and debris, how much of that do you see blowing down your racetrack?

But hay what do I know about drag racing and making LS1's fast?

while dyno comparing filters is not the best method, because no dyno run is exactly the same. Many people have shown a loss of hp form removing a filter, explaning that the filter removed the turbulence from the airflow.

For the minute gains, i would find power elsewere. Even a .10 is sometimes just a better run overall that would have neted faster anyways.

Ya i dont think i've ever seen dirt and rocks flying around on the drag track .. So when i go out my filter is coming out.

Also its not going to show any gains on the dyno bc your sitting still thats kind of a given that your not gunna gain much sitting still. In order for air to be forced in you have to be going ... Have you ever held your hand out the window sitting at a light?? Have you held your hand out the window while going 90mph? LOL ya its a given its not gunna show up on the dyno

Your gonn see a gain at the track more than a dyno because your car is moving. Like the SLP flow-pak isn't really helping that much when you sitting still but when your going 80 it going to help a lot more. And the fans they put in front of your car on the dyno don't make up for the high speeds of the strip

what they do is wet the road coming into the track so the dust doesnt fly but by the end of the night every stupid person flys in and parks stering up all the dirt and it visualy and physicaly clouds up and goes over the track they end up preping it again after awhile....ask anyone who races at sunshine in st pete fl about it along with bradenton but bradenton is nowhere near as bad as ss.

the anouncer is allwasys yelling at people to sloooow down on the way in.

im not saying it wouldn't gain anyting, all i'm saying it can't be much of a restriction. I have a SSRA so i can see how it would increase when moving...you don't have to be rude about it. I was just sharing valid information..
