Default wth is wrong?!

either i suck at drag racing or my car sucks at life. this is my first time out drag racing so im going to go with i suck at racing but my trans am is a completely stock minus cut out 2000 and my first run was brakestanding at about 1500rpm a 14.2 with a .6 reaction time, 2.2 60", and 99.7 trap speed spinning through 1st. second run was no brake stand not really spinning, 14.1, .6 reaction time, 2.2 60", 99.8 trap speed. and on my third run i roasted the tires (it was like a burnout, had to get completely off the gas and wait for traction, 2500rpm brakestand, 14.2, 2.4 60', and a 101.3 trap speed. now i think if i didn't roast the tires on the third run it woulda been a 13.9 run but still i was under the impression these were mid 13 second cars stock...am i that bad?

Get tires and practice. Overall, considering mine's built for low-mid 11's, my very first run on Nitto 275/40R/17 drag radials on cold tires was 13.47 > 2.4x 60' > mph 112.x. Near identical weather, my 2nd time to the track, I had MT 315/35R/17 Street Drag radials on cold tires, went 12.214 > 1.707 60' > same mph 112.x.

So, I sucked worse than you and STILL suck at stragiht-line racing. Now that cool weather is here, I have bought 17" 2002 WS6 Speedlines that are lighter and will put MT 275/40R/17 Street Drag radials on them. This time, I'll line up behind some big slcik cars and burn the MT's until they damn near catch fire. Then, I'll easily hit 11's. Plus, I'll be going out with new American Racing headers with 1 7/8" primaries (future D-1SC/8-rib).

I'm hoping the diffence between my MAC mids and the AHR's will drastically increase my MPH. Right now, the power levels at 6300-6500 rpm's. I know my H/C Mamo combo will make better power in the upper rpm band. I have too much 'down low' power that breaks the tires loose too easy. Hopefully, with the ARH's, I'll push the power up a little farther and harness some power I haven't been able to use.

You don't suck. You're like me ... just learning what your best combo is. You'll reel in the times your car is capable of.

What gears, 2.73's or 3.23's? Look at the sticker in the glovebox, 2.73's = GU2. 13.7@101 would not be bad with 2.73's.

As mentioned, as you make more runs you'll find out what the car likes for the best 60 foots and e.t.s. But a few things to consider:

I wouldn't stall the car as high as you are doing. 900-1100 rpm should be plenty as you want the converter to "flash" to help weight move from front to back as you launch instead of "pushing" like what will happen if you stall too high.

Roll into the throttle on street tires (non-drag radials). I've gotten numerous 2.0 60 foots from my stock 245/50/16's at about 25-27 psi.

Don't do a huge burnout. I go around the water, get lined up in the tracks in front of me, stall her up to about 1000 rpm then release the brake and drop the hammer hard with the shifter in 1st. The tires will spin a good amount to clean off any water or debris and will clean the tires.

Practice always helps, and you'll find mid 13s with time.

Dude you don't suck you're waiting too long for the light, don't want for the green, gas it when the last yellow flashes.

Buy some drag radials and go have some fun.

reaction time has nothing to do with ET (unless your bracket racing). If your working on ET, go when your ready. Any time after it goes green. On street tires, roll the throttle off idle.

You don't have to really light up street tires, but are you doing a small burnout? (you should do a small one AFTER the wetbox to clean off the tires and warm them up a bit) Also, your sig says the car is stock, is all the maintenance up to par?

next time i go i'm gonna try easing in on the peddle instead of just mashing it to the floor. i could definetly see that helping with traction. i guess i had a little bit of the nervous/adrenaline going through me the first couple times. i didn't know what to expect. its a blast tho minus the hour wait in between runs. but i definetly wanna go again. i gotta get it into at least the 13's

i would say that the problem is only going 99 mph. did you have a head wind. When i was stock i was seeing 103 MPH in the dead heat of summer and if anything a head wind. I went as high as 105.4 MPH stock.

yea i dunno whats up with the 99's since i was able to pull a 101 with less track due to being a couple feet down the strip before i actually started accelerating. i didn't really pay attention to the wind...or much else. next time i'll actually take note of that stuff

PSJ has a point. low gears kill trap speed and would explain why the car doesn't seem to be trapping where most do.
as far as the ET thing, practice. play with air pressures a bit(up in front and down in back) and play with different launches to see what the car really wants.
you can get an idea of how t get your car rolling from the suggestions of others, but seat time is the only way you will ever perfect it.

good luck!

i'm getting 21mpg daily and 27 highway so im guessing i got the 2.73 gearing. which i actually dont mind. honestly this is more of a daily driver than a drag racer so i'd take the mileage. and i drive back and forth to new jersey alot so the lower gearing might save the engine a little on those long trips

there are a few mods you can do to improve both power and fuel economy if you don't already have them.
little things like lids, a ram air set up(slp/fast toys.....there are a bunch of them), and exhaust work will all lend to air flow which is the key element in improving gas mileage.
the biggest place to get some gas mileage and power is a good tune. get your self a copy of HPTuners and clean up the factory settings. GM programmed our cars to run rich as hell with really lame timing tables.

where in jersey do you drive to? there are a "few" members on the NJFBOA that would be happy to meet you and let you join in on our antics when you are in town.
