Going TH400, what do I need in the tranny?

Man, I never thought going to a "simple" tranny could be so confusing. I have quotes ranging from $1200 to $5200 for a built TH400 with RMVB and T brake. Every builder says their tranny will handle my motor and then some, yet there are huge differences in price and parts used. My car weighs about 3600 with driver, makes 740 RWHP through the A4 right now (I'll turn it up a little later, maybe 850 RWHP or so) and should run mid 9's. I've been 139.3 in the 1/4. I really though it would be cheaper to run a TH400 but by the time I get all the other stuff (shifter, driveshaft, crossmember, etc) its gonna be as bad as a 4L80E!

I've decided I want to use a builder who is semi local so if I have problems I'm not shipping a tranny all over hells half acre. The best local price is $3500 and sounds like it would be the best tranny. He rattled off a long list of parts he uses and says his tranny doesn't eat as much power as the cheaper ones. This builder is Bob Alexander in Clinton Il. He crew cheifs for GMPP on their LSx stuff, so he is familiar with this stuff.

Based on my needs/goals, what do I really need in a TH400? I'll never make 1500 HP, run 8's, or any of that stuff.

I'm pretty sure that's who Steve Burger used to build his last th350 and it held up good. I believe he'll be building the trans for the new setup also. From what Steve has told me, he really stands behind his work too. Send Steve a pm or maybe he'll chime in here and confirm.

Plenty of shops to use for a TH400 or TH350 to handle your needs, local or national. Depending on your options, I'd say you'll be spending $1200-1600 with a brake but no converter or sheild.

Mikes Transmissions in Lancaster CA Has a TH400 For ~1800-1900 That is damn reputable. Ive seen two of them behind my buddys race cars. One of the cars is 850rwhp D1SC 346 GMHTP Cover Car and the other is a Solid Roller 408 245 ET heads with two stages of N20. Both

Id check out Rossler Transmissions as well they seem to have there TH400 stuff down pretty well

I would say FLT. It's not a terrible drive for you and your not going to deal with better cusomer service. These guys are really into what they do and are very helpful. They built my th400 for 1200rwhp and they did it for quite a bit less than the $3500 your talking but there are some options that can increase or decrease the price, just depends on your needs. You should call them and talk to Chuck, tell him what you need and he'll work with you.

I ordered a TCI Comp TH400 #TCI 212506 . $2200.
Yank SC3000 Verter $1000
Cheeta Shfiter $180
TCI Cooler $ already had it.
Sphon Drive shaft $400
Yank X-member $150

I had right at $4000 in the swap. It is not cheap but it was worth it in my Turbo car. Do it once. Do it right.

Don't forget ATI transmissions out of baltimore.....

I have one..... relatively cheap (tranny was like 1200-1300 bucks and converter was 900)....

it's been sitting behind my 9 second LT1 without so much as a hiccup.... and the other day i was on the brake for like 10 seconds at WOT and it didn't even care....

Like others have said it does not matter much with what you want.

Im going with a TH-210 and they start at $4,XXX but Ill be making some power. If I just wanted to run 9's I would not care TO much who I sent it to. My last motor was about to break into the 9's on the bottle with either a stock TH-400 or it had very little done to it and it held up great and the fluid look great when I pulled it.
Its going to be my core for the 210.

Theres some good ones out there and some I'de steer away from. Rossler and ATI are two companies of a few that are hard to beat. Call Bob at ATI and tell him Robbie Dowdy referred you. Have all the specs on your car and engine ready. They will set you up with what you need and get you a converter to fit your needs. They're pretty sharp up there.

Talk to Eric from Midwest chasis about a driveshaft and cross member. I'm sure prices have gone up like everything but in the early spring I got my Strange made 3" cromemoly driveshaft and the trans mount for $385 out the door. And they were very stout pieces. With less options you can get your price down. On the upper price ranges did that include the SFI approved bell housing and flexplate? Also is that including the converter? What was the make of the valvebody used? There are always ways to cut corners but at your power level I don't know if you would want to.

210 and 210XHD both do not come with a SFI bell as far as I know but it could just not be listed.

The XHD is on sale for $4,995, regular is 5,395, no stall.

Figure at least bare minimum $1,200 for a stall to go with that kind of power level. ATI is a good one also.
