I run the 28x10.5W tire on my car (only because I don't class race, they fit fine and I wanted the biggest tire I could fit)...
Car makes about 800 RWHP.... Best 60' right now has been 1.38 lifting to bring the front end down on about 1/2 of the total spray we're gonna run..... tires hook like a 14 year old Thai girl.....

How well are the W's holding up for you?
See, I had the same thought with getting the most amount of tread under the car that I could (I went with Hoosier 29x10.5W's last year), but after killing the sidewalls, I called M/T, Hoosier, and Goodyear.
Interestingly enough, they all suggested to go with the SMALLER stiff sidewall tires since my heavy BBC powered car was hard on the sidewalls. They went on to say that the ~10.2" tread width would be plenty for me. I wound up ordering 28x10.5 Stiffs from Hoosier, so we'll see how those work next year.
