A few "progress" pics...

Re: A few
Jay I have removed that cowl area a long time ago and ran in the low 9's with huge amounts of torque and had no problems. I do have a cage though, but it was at the time just a little bolt 6 pt cage.. I think it would be fine. You can cut the underside and still leave the upper half so you have the full plastic weather stripping attached

Looking good George!
Cant wait to see the results of your new project. hehe
I even thought about tossing together a cheap carbed 350 motor for my car since I still have the car at the moment and in the whole realm of PRICE, it would be cheap in comparison to what Ive done.
But I dont think it will happen.
Good luck!

I didn't have to support the upper section at all when I cut out the radiator piece... With the car just sitting still, and the crossmember in place, everything stays stiff and doesn't flex at all. I took a few measurements before and after.
As far as the cowl, it's much stiffer/stronger than factory now, since I boxed it in with heavy 16ga. steel plate. Plus, I'm installing a full rollcage with a dash bar, so strength and integrity are well covered.
Dave D.: I'm planning on flying in to New Orleans and renting a car (which I'll bracket race ). I doubt my car will be done in time for next year's Thunder Shootout, but I'm going to work on it as fast I can afford to without cutting any corners.
Sled: Actually, it's going to be pink... At least that's what the color is called...

looking good Fish! Glad to see the downtime from work hasn't gotten you bored! Can't wait to see it scrape the bumper once you finish it up and bolt in my spare 307 motor! Anything new on the truck?

Actually, here are a couple pics of the only piece I've painted so far (I just wanted to paint it to see how I liked the color...). At some angles, it just looks like red, while at other angles you can see the purple/pink pearl in the paint. The picture doesn't do it justice at all. It's absolutely gorgeous looking in the sunlight...

Cool your going to have a pink Hot Rod. My wife would love it! Ha, Ha, Ha!
Hey good luck with the build up. Please keep us posted.
The idea of a old school SB has crossed my mine a few times.

I saw an old Super Chevy Magazine with a 96 Camaro SS equipped with a 502. That image is still burning at me. I caught myself looking at crate motors yesterday. Merlin 540, American Speed 383. Both cheaper then a stroked LS1....things that make you go "hmmmmmmmm"
