I wanted to keep the install clean and put mine in the small defroster vent on the driver's side. It's a Harlan shift light and I never had any trouble noticing when it was lit. I also drive with my left hand on top of the steering wheel and could still see it. The only mod was to turn the vent over so it points to you instead of the window. Here's a quick video clip..

I have my Harlan shift light mounted on top of the steering column. I mounted it with a real thin strip of self-adhisive velcro. It has held just fine for several years now and looks very clean. It’s also easy to remove if you need to dissassemble the dash for any reason. The wiring runs straight out the back of the light and between the column and gauge cluster surround molding. No problem with seeing it light up while keeping your eyes on the track. Tach is way too slow in the lower gears, even if I had time to take my eyes off the track to watch it. That’s why I got the shift light to begin with. I’d get you some pics, but I’m in Iraq right now.

I mounted my Raptor on the steering column. Just used the little plastic bracket it came with and 2 sided tape about 1/2"x1/2" square. You JUST see all 7 LEDs behind the steering wheel when its not lit...when it lights off, its right in my face....works well.

Here is mine, I am happy with it and going to keep it this way. There is no mistake you need to shift when it goes off.

I just used 2 short screws and screwed it right down, thin material but as long as you dont mess with it its fine, column still can tilt the full motion too. All the places are good it just comes down to personal preference.

If it was me, I would get the pencil type from AutoMeter and drill a hole in the dash. Put it at the front lip of the gage cluster so you can see it either above or below the steering wheel.

Just a thought and my .02¢

Mine works great in the vent above the cd player. I can see it even when the sun is in my face. I have the Blue Raptor and love it.

Heres whats I did with mine

https://ls1tech.com/forums/manual-tr...shiftlite.html

http://www.harlan-engineering.com/store/store.html

I used to have my shiftlight in the center heat vent, like alot of other people do. It was a great spot at night, and fine during the day if you had it aimed right at you. Was nice and :snky: with the stock wheels, and quite exhaust. Same as in this guys vid, his light is broke or something? lol http://s8.photobucket.com/albums/a15...t=P3260316.flv
I just had it on with velcro, and got sick of it moving when it got really hot in the car sitting in the sun. And if the vent moved blocking it. So moved it into the dash, for a cleaner look. Took the light apart and took the LED face off the board, it was small enough to fit in the stock gauge cluster. Just had to hand drill the holes carefully in the living room. The LEDs pressed into the holes, thanks for the help brent it was a bitch. And just soldered some wire lengths on that board to go back to the main shift light.

Been working great, like it a lot better. I didnt put any kind of a sealer, just pressed LEDS on and thought it would be fine sealing up flush to the back. But the base of the LEDs have a little lip so they still pick up a little of the cluster backlighting. Hasn't bothered me, but I'll porbally try to seal it better with some black RTV to block light better. When I have it out again to cover the BRAKE light, and see if it looks any more stealthy at night.

Here is a vid in action.
