Wow, old post back from the dead.
As a follow-up, I put a set of 3.42 gears in there and got some BFG drag radials, and the car actually started pulling some good times. 60's still weren't amazing (1.85s), but the car actually started to ET better (went from running consistent 8.7-8.8 down to 8.3s in the 1/8th mile). The combo in the car when I made this post was just a shitty combo. Very little power, poor gearing, a smaller stall, heavy car, and a suspension set up for handling. After the gears and tires, and with a better suspension setup, that converter was pulling some decent times, and after I put the 4000 stall and baby cam in there, it's moving alright now despite still having the LS1 intake and stock pulley.
