Automatic shifters- detent, gate, ratchet ...
What's the difference??
I'm looking for a shifter for a manual VB TH350 that will allow me to "hit" the shifter one time to shift from 1st to 2nd, without worrying about overshooting into 3rd. Then smack it again to shift from 2nd the 3rd, without worrying about throwing it into neutral. So what kind of shifter do I need?

We use Precision Performance shifter. They are the best out there for a 3 speed.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone, but I'm still confused as to what the differences are in the gate, detent, and ratchet mechanisms. I see the hurst quarterstick is a gate style (according to summit) and the pro ratchet is a ratchet (obviously). So what's the difference? I understand how the ratchet works (I think), but would the design of the quarter stick allow me to overshoot the 1-2 shift and put it in 3rd, unlike the ratchet?

Gate - Couple diferent styles Winters/Cheetah/Art Carr requires two motions to select a gear (side and back or side and forward, whichever the case may be)... On the Pro stick/Quarter stick style shifters it's a push or pull from 1st to 2nd, a slight trigger pull combined with a push or pull to 3rd... So to answer your question... No. You need to actuate the trigger to get 3rd.
Detent - Pretty much like most a factory type shifter. You can feel the indexes for the gears, but nothing stops you from going from 1st to 3rd in one motion.
Ratchet - Once you pull the shifter back into your forward gears, the handle stays in the same spot. Each time you push or pull the shifter it changes 1 gear, and 1 gear only, then springs back.
The whole idea behind the gate and ratchets are to prevent skipping a gear or hitting neutral... And of course the obvious safety lockout of reverse. SO in closing, what you are describing is a ratchet shifter.

I really need to get my hands on a Quarter stick I guess. I'm kind of torn between that and the Cheetah. I think the ratchet style might get old for me real quick, noting Madman and AgFormula02's comments. The only thing I'm really concerned about is going for 3rd and overshooting into neutral. For the Cheetah my concern is how well it can handle "abuse" by my banging gears. It's mostly plastic, correct?

IMHO, the ratchet is easiest to drive on the steet with a mvb/rmvb. Ya just slap it around... Granted it's a pain on a standard mvb to go from 1st to park... Which you have to do pretty much every time you enter a parking lot and park.
