The thing is the cost. If you have a 9.70 goal let's say, putting the $ into building the rest of the car would be better suited then building a turbo setup that will make 1000 hp.
Getting the car to work, that type of stuff will make it more reliable, and more street friendly then just trying to muscle a non working car to a 9.x pass @ 150 mph.
I've gone 9.9 @ 137 mph, so if you really only need hp to get to say a 140 mph trap speed, not a 150+ like a big turbo build will do.
Auto tranny will make the needed power alot less, and the car alot more reliable with less breakage. Stick, yes it can be done, but you're gonna frag alot more driveline parts in the long run I am 100% sure of that.
Weight too, where you can save it is very helpful. Like I said, get a car with the 9 second safety gear and your needed street gear to 3500 lbs with driver and you will only need about 625 rwhp to get to a 9.9 or better.
My sled @ 3350 with a 150 hit of nitrous goes 9.5x, and it only makes about 460 rwhp with the nitrous tune. On a pump gas setup with the same tranny/converter it would probably be around 430, so ya hit it with 200 and it will still get there. I'm on a 402ci motor... build a 427 or bigger, and it only gets easier.
9 second streetable recipe with a big ci motor and nitrous, can be done without too much drama at all, and still be plenty docile to drive without any issues. If I wasn't on a 13.5 to 1 compression, I probably could drive mine every day. With a 4l80 so I'd have overdrive and a pump gas compression ratio, absolutely I could drive it around.

Right. The th400 made it more of a hardcore street car then anything. With the availability of the 4l80 and the amount of abuse that OD tranny can take, I'd bet the car would have been a ton more street friendly.
Don't get me wrong I'd drive a powerglide on the street it wouldn't bother me at all... but some guys would freak about not being able to cruise at 75 and have the rpm under 2500 while doing it.
If you were to build a 434 or 440 lsx motor, with a decent, not even great just decent heads and a 240ish duration hydraulic cam and a fast intake, the motor would make big power and not even have to turn alot of rpm to do it... allowing a tighter converter, say a 3800 size nitrous converter which would be pretty good feeling on the street... and I'm sure at 3500 lbs and a 200 shot 9 second passes wouldn't be an issue.

As said, the lighter you can get it the better, and the easier. An old setup I had (302 SBF, iron Darts, Vic jr no port work, 850 carb, 10:1 made 425 FWHP) and I sprayed it with a 175 shot, so roughly 600 FWHP (never dynoed with the nitrous) that car ran 9.70's with a tremec 5 speed on pump gas. Car went @ 2800 lbs with me in it.
