Question Stock width 9-inch, no mini-tubbing... what size wheel studs?

I'm pulling the axles in my 9-inch because I put my ABS gears on backwards. While the axles are out I think it would be a good time to upgrade wheel studs. I do not have dedicated racing wheels yet, but I could see getting some down the road. For now I'm just using GrandSports with drag radials with stock-length studs. I have no plans to mini-tub the car or have the rearend narrowed. As far as front wheels go, I don't think I drag race nearly enough to make an investment in skinnies.

It sounds like most guys running 12mm x 1.50 run a 2.5" ARP 7708 or a 3.25" ARP 7713. What length should I go with for my setup?

If you are planning on getting into racing more the stud upgrade is a good idea. the longer they are, the happier the tech guys usually are. They see stud sticking out the end of the lugnut they will never hassle you about them that I am sure of.

A few more questions:
  1. How do you decide if it's necessary to go with a 1/2" stud over a stock-style 12mm stud?
  2. If I go with a 1/2 stud, do I have to worry about my GrandSports (or my stock brakes) fitting? I'm guessing "no"

I seem to remember Scott @ Driveline Solutions going somewhere in the low 10's on ARP 12mm studs... so I'm guessing I'll be OK. But I just wanna double-check before I pop parts off.

I doubt there's any significant strength gains to be had by 12mm or 1/2" studs. When you get really serious then you'll step up to 5/8" studs and drag only rims. But for now just pop on the longer 12mm and keep your stock lug nuts for street rims. I am running the 3.25" ones and they pass tech easily with the pro stars

Pete,

On my 12 bolt I am running 1/2" studs that are 3.00" long and I have no problems on my OEM Grandsports or my reproduction ZR1s that have ET Streets on them.

Just checked my axles tonight--they're drilled for two patterns:
1. 12mm press-in studs
2. 12mm screw-in studs

Looks like I'll be going with a set of ARP 7713's -- too bad they're $60 for both sides!
