as soon as i get a rear and some traction i should be able to run deep into the 11's and im starting to think about possible t/a selections.

i really want a spohn t/a, but two things are hindering my selection. 1= budget, 2= exhuast (want to get a custom exhuast done in the next month and i would have to get the spohn first and work around it.)

i was wondering if any of the low 11 high 10 second guys are running t/a mounted to the the tailshaft of the tranny still. spohn just came out with a badass tailshaft mounted one and its fairly inexpensive. it would also eliminate my exhuast problems

what are you guys' opinions on this.

I've been running the same old LG Heavy Duty Torque Arm I bought 2 years ago. Its mounted to my transmission etc. I'm cutting 1.46 60's with it.

The torque arm is an important part to launching the car. But I know there are ALOT of guys running low 10's even 9's with the stock torque arm. If you are having traction problems upgrading the TA might help you out.

I hear the Sphon TA is a good piece so in the Random Tech and the BMR. But I would recommend waiting to do your exhaust until after you get a TA.

My Random Tech TQ arm is tailshaft mounted. It ran 9s. Might run 8s.

Same here. If I ever needed a new torque arm I might try one like the Random Tech weld n cross member one.

 

I switched earlier this year to an adjustable Spohn for one reason: trans tailshaft durability. I had run 1.41-1.42's with the stock t/arm. However, I split two urethane bushings and bent the snot out of two bushing/mount steel shells that they go in. If I had made another run after doing this, luckily, on my last runs on two occasions, I probably would have ripped the tailshaft off.

Yank makes a nice crossmount for stock-style t/arms that takes the front mount off the tailshaft. Spohn, BMR, and others make nice ones for off the tailshaft.

I did not see any gain with the Spohn, but in it's defense, I run it right now at 0 deg. pinion angle. I probably could launch a bit harder with a couple of two or three degrees negative. Nevertheless, I feel a lot better about taking the front of the arm off the trans. Take care.

 

I ran the R/T mounted on the tail of my 4L60E, and the stock mount was bent up pretty bad when I took all that stuff off earlier this year. The R/T was fine.

 

I ran the tail mounted RT. 1.50 sixties and bottom 11's

 

i have run my bmr torque arm with no problems. in fact, its the only suspension mod on my car.

 

i have broken 3 tailshaft housings...at first i thought it was the tq arm mounting on it, but now i say it must be the driveshaft since im nowhere near some of you guys and you have no problems...

it was strange because i had no vibration at all...i would run it up to 140mph and it would break topping out 3rd?

now i feel a vibration...

 

what do you guys think of the new spohn tailshaft mounted torque arm for like 300 bucks??

that is the one im thinking about getting now?

 

I dunno. I just switched to a chassis mount TA out of concern. I was afraid the tail housing might break or the torque arm would bend so I just picked up a MAC chassis mount torque arm for $200.

 

i didnt know mac made a chassis mount torque arm, more info please. . .

 

i pmed magnus asking for some more info...

he wrote me back...basically you have to drill holes in the chassis to mount it...i cant even find any more info about it on their site or a place that sells it...

 

My buddy just spent $300 on a Yank adapter that switches the mounting point of the Torque arm off the tranny.

He has true duals and there is no clearance issue.

 

I know that the automatic cars don't have a problem with durability, but what about the m6's? I would think they are the only ones killing the tail shafts...please correct me if I'm wrong

your wrong...i havent heard of a single m6 breaking tailshaft housings...ive read multiple instances of it happening on a4's...

the housing on the a4 is pretty flimsy...especially where it reduces around the bolts to where it starts to slim down...the aluminum is very thing...

i think in general the t56 housing is slimmer from the bolts to the driveshaft making it more durable...

 

I have went through 2 stock trans mounts , 2 poly trans mounts and 1 torque arm mount and I'm ordering a spohn in 2-3 weeks or as soon as I get a chance.
