Default Tire size difference

Would going from a 26" to a 26.5" slow me down?

I know it changes the gear ratio but I don't know whether it is a possitive or a negative change.

For example....i have 3.91 gears. Would the numberical number go up or down with a taller tire?

Stock size is 25.7. My current tire is 26.0. The tire I want to try is 26.5. I'm curious if I'm going backwards in performance.

A larger tire will slow you down but not much. Going from 26 to 26.5 want make much of a difference.

That's what I thought. I just found a tire calculator that lets you put in the rear gear and tire size. Supposively stock tire is 3.91 gears and this 26.5 would give me 4.03.

Now I'm all sorts of confused.

It is the other way around.

A taller tire will make your gear ratio LOWER numerically.

If you have say 4.10's in teh car, and you are running a 26" tall tire, and then you up to say a 28" tall tire, it will make it seem like you @ 3.73's

Oh, and to answr your question, going from a 26 to a 26.5 is not gonna make any difference for you to notice. Maybe a hundreth of a second or something, if that at all. You may actually GAIN some ET. Going to a bigger (taller) tire like that, does give you more footprint, so you may hook better

I'm looking for max mph and et. I'm at the 11.0 mark. I've hit a 10.98 before but now that it's hot i've been stuck at 11.0s and looking to break the barrier again.

I also want the confidence of hooking every time. I'm using a 17x9 wheel...with a 275/40/17 tire. I was considering ditching the MT DRs for a Hoosier DR but they look like a slick and not sure how they would be for daily duties.

If you drive it on the street often you don't want the Hoosiers because they won't last long at all. What kind of 60fts are you cutting?

I've gotten a couple of 1.57s, couple 1.58s, couple 1.60s, and on up. Mostly seems to depend on track prep. I'd like to consistently cut a 1.55-1.57. I'm on a 3200 stall. Not too concerned with how long the tire lasts....I've gone through 3 sets of nittos, and then this set of MTs. I'm more interested in completely hooking at the track and decent street manners. I avoid driving in the rain.

The change will be insignifigant. Because of the type of tire it is, the growth is minimal and your not driving on the bonneville salt flats or texas mile.

I believe I saw in another thread someone was getting 30 passes out of the Hoosiers before they needed to be replaced. And that was on a race car that never sees track time.

The gf's car has gone 1.47's on spray with the same tires you have. I would stick with the MTs and just work on some suspension.

My suspension is completely stock. That's a whole other confusing battle as well. Some say I want the car to squat. Others say I don't.

I can get drag bags for about a $100 and they just allow you to air up the "bag" inside of the spring to reduce squat. Just not sure if that is the direction I should be going.

I am not an expert but from what I have read you want to rear as stiff as possible. Energy used to make the car squat is wasted. It needs to be used to move the car forward instead.

Yeah I've heard both opinions. I always thought you wanted squat (weight transfer)

sean...you dont want squat...thats wasted energy...you want the car to stay in place and the suspension push the tires into the ground...

and do it dont worry about the tire height...even 28s wont hurt much...i did it in my car and lost .4 in the 1/8 from 26 to 28's

You got .4 faster going to 28s from 26s or you got .4 slower?
