what does everyone use to pull there motors?

Default what does everyone use to pull there motors?

I'm ready to put my motor in and would really like to use the old school carb plate with the hook on it. My only worry is I wonder if the bolts that hold down the vic jr to my heads will hold the weight. There pretty thin bolts but there are 10 of them vs. 4 on the 4150 plate. I seen that they sell a plate that replaces the valley cover but not lookin to spend the money.

How does everyone mount there motors up?

I pulled the chassis up over mine. Unplugged the sensors, took out the 6 K-member bolts, unbolted the tranny x-member, set the front end on an old Lowes flat cart, took a hoist and lifted the nose up. Just slid the front subframe/engine/tranny out the side. Installation was pretty damn easy also.

I've pulled them from the bottom with the kmember and also through the top.

If going out the top, I pull the intake manifold off then just bolt a chain from the backside of one cyl head to the front of the other going diagonally across the valley cover. Keep that chain tight across, then attach it to the hoist via a vertical chain/hook. Works great everytime.

Out the bottom is typicaly the esiest way to take these out. I havn't done this specific motor pull but if you look at the pic posted with the hoist, you will see much of the front off. I would assume some of that is for other reasons but the long nose on these cars would make it rather hard to work on. You drop the k member with 6 bolts, loosen your steeting, and drop entire shebang out the bottom. Then you have plenty of room to hook chains or whatnot to lift the motor.

well with my specific car i have no more cowl on it from when i cut it back to the windshield, so i have plenty of room to get it in/out from the top. Ill most likely resort to the chain on the heads plan if nobody has done it from the 4 manifold bolts. Just dont wanna risk scratching the **** outta my freshely painted firewall and cowl plate ya know.

however by looking at the chain plan, it looks far enough down and away from the cowl so if all else fails i go that route but hopefully someone has pulled it out from the manifold.....

just did the chain method and didn't have to pull any of the front end apart. came out easy

I had the same thought about the manifold bolts. Theyre too small, and the vic jr is too light in my opinion to handle the weight of the entire engine - wasnt worth the risk.

I did the chain to the back of the head to a chain to the opposite front head crossing over the valley. Only 1 HUGE caveat - make sure the bolt you use to hold the chain on the back side head is short enough to remove (does not hit the firewall) when you go to take it out. I made this mistake - if you use a bolt that is too long, youll end up pulling the engine back out to change the bolt or cut the bolt off and risk scratching.

And with a cut cowl, to hell with dropping the K member. I can pull the engine and trans still connected out the top in less than an hour.

I've pulled from the top, I have used straps and chains, using 2 exsisting bolts either off the cyl head, or exhaust maniford bolts. No issues.

^^^^ yup on a dont use a long bolt in there rear

You can use the carb plate right on the valley pan, do that a few time. The longblock without manifolds, and just the covers isnt that heavy the 4 bolts are fine. I use 4 long bolts with a washer and nut on them, set them like a stud so you use all the threads in the block. Just hand tighten them, your'll be fine. The added weight of a iron block offsets that the threads are stronger.

My custom made badassness cradle. I left a notch in the front for the jack, so you can just lower front of car down on it with the floor jack, then lift the car up from the k member with engine hoist.

qtp sells a plate that botls on in place of the existing valley cover, it's got a hook on it and whatnot... nice piece.

I would never take the motor out thru the bottom. Then, you have a car that you can't move around without doing some partial reassy that you will have to undo to put it back together.

Out the top.... only way. Even with the cowl there, it isn't a big deal to take it out the top. I'll take pic's when mine comes out in a couple months.

mine out the top also across the heads...use an engine leveler!! it makes it simple

Make your own plate. 6"wide 1/4" flat steel. Make it 12" long. Drill 3 holes in each side to match your valley cover. Drill a 1/2" hole in the center, then bolt you an eye hook through it. I just made one last week. I tried to post a pic but it wouldnt load.

yea i was thinking about that but was unsure about welding a hook on it. But forgot about just buying a hook to bolt through it. Imma check at work to see if i have some steel. If not i think my local hardware store has that stuff. HUMMMM.........

I'm doing mine out the top, I already pulled it out the top like in the pic above with a chain across the heads, it was a cinch. I should be ready to drop it back in the next week or so. hopefully it'll drop back in as easily as it came out.

I made the plate, because I didn't want the chain digging into the aluminum block or heads when it tightens up. The plate is great. LOL!!!
