I leave mine in 3rd because I set it up to top out going thru the traps. If I had to go into 4th (OD) I would probably lift because of the power I'm making now. But I did shift into 4th @ WOT with my 400rwhp cam only motor several times with no issues.

I do my burnout in second and race in 3rd. But I have a lazy *** tranny that takes what seems like half a second to shift.

I'm curious about trying this! But I don't get it, what's the purpose of having a "built" tranny that's supposed to shift at maximum performance if racing it in 3rd gear is better? I just want more info or experiences on this since I'm prepping my h/c/nitrous setup for drag racing. This thread was a good read for me.

I used to leave mine in 3rd but every now and then it would whack the rev limiter on the 2-3 shift when going down the track. A member here told me about trying it in OD, and the problem hasn't happened in 7 years since then. Granted my car is only slightly modified, but just sharing my results.

BTW, my car did shift into overdrive at WOT on a high speed "check out" run when I first got it (bone stock with about 12,000 miles on it).

When you leave it in "D" the overruns will apply on the 2-3 shift. So you have another clutch coming on along with the 3-4's. This will take apply oil away from the 3-4 clutch pack, and send it to the overruns. Which is not the best thing. If you leave it in "OD" the overrun clutches don't apply, so no apply oil is going elsewhere, giving you the best WOT 2-3 shift.

WOW!!! Thank you!!! That could probably explain why I would bounce off the rev limiter on my 2-3 shift everytime going down the track in 3rd. I will have to try it in OD and see if there is a difference.

Does this also apply to a 4L60E rebuilt done with a with a TCI Master Racing rebuild kit and TransGo HD2? ..I always have left in 3 and not OD @ the track..The car shifts great with no complaints!

Yes, when racing in the qtr mile its best to gear your car so you run the end of the track in your 1:1 gear, I only mentioned being able to to shift into 4th at WOT because a couple members thought you couldn't, the reason you would want to. . . . . . . . . Highway runs and standing mile events.

Back when my 4l60e car was stock, it ran it's fastest pass of 13.28 leaving it in regular Drive/OD. I tried manually shifting it a few times and could never go faster than 13.36

Leave it in Drive and let it do its thing.

4l60e is computer controlled weather you shift manually or leave it in drive. when you roll race you should manually down shift it so the clutches are fully engaged and not trying to engage under power. When i race from a dig, track or street, i put it in first so if i spin and ease off the throttle it doesn't shift into the next gear early, as it would if you were in drive. if you shift early it will give the computer time to react and wont hit the rev limiter.

I leave mine in 3. Heard about the extra "something" engaged when you leave it like that. I forget all the details. Probably the same thing that was typed a few posts above.
