Too much gear for an A4?
Would a 4.56 gear with a 26 inch M/T radial be too much? My car is stock internal, weight reduction, 2800 yank stall, lid, headers, ported tb and ls6 intake. I found one locally on the cheap. Gas mileage is of no concern.

I think it has the potential too be a bit too much. Had the car been a M6 I would say it's probably just right (for a mainly track set up). When dealing with either trans the 1:1 ratio is the same but that 1st gear with that small of a tire MAYBE too much given the steeper 1st gear in the Auto.
Until you try and see you wont know.
For those who take into consideration gas milage 3.73 is "Generally Accepted Average", 4.10's "Hot Street Setup", 4.30's "General Accepted Race Track Ratio"
I'd start running some gear calculator and take into consideration Tire size from 26" to 28" tall as the taller the tire will knock down the ratio but often contact patch increased which allow to better hit the tire.

Gearing will certainly help that Lo Po stall converter BUT considering its being sprayed IMO I would do a 4.10 and try it out on the 26" tall tire and see where it gets you.
You may run out of RPM, hopefully you can bump that but if you cant, up the tire to either 27 or 28.
Also to mention IF going with a ET Drag, you generally get approx 1" of tire growth at speed. Which again will help you. Luckily with that tight of a stall your not going to be losing RPM due to slip.
I am willing to wager that gearing calc in the rear end section is pretty accurate to your MPH traps. Just monitor or log the RPM and look at the Slip.

i run a auto with 430 gears and 26 inch tall tires and i think its too much gear which is why i want to run a 27, but i do run 1/8th mile around here. i debated between the 430's i ended up going with and the 456's. If you were to step up to a 28 tall tire i think you would be fine. EDIT i just saw that you are on spray so yeah i would definetly go with a 4.10 maybe even 373 gear
