the right way to find out what you guys need to no is contact your division headquarters be it nhra/ihra they are the ones who make the rules ,or contact a competent shop who build cars ,also a lot of guys are calling roll bars cages this is also wrong [this is quite common]so when some one calls for quote first we have to find out what they are talking about :drivepro
heres a paragraph i made for the fast ls1 site [it is also post in ls1 tech a few times as people asked ] alot of people are useing the wrong terminoligy] ,a cage is a cage and a roll bar is a roll bar[a roll bar can have 5pts 6pts 7pts and8 pts,a cage can have 6 pt ,8,10 12pts] a lot of people call up for cages and their trying to ask for roll bars its a common mistake
,most cages are actualy are 6pt unless 2 diagnal bars go to tunnel or frame connectors[before everyone jumps on me the 2 side bars usually go to the front uprights so unless you have the 2 diags like i said and they are mandatory when a cage is put on plates[pge 209 of rule book see diag. read D] if its a chassis car[ ie chevelle, malibu, corvetteanything with a full frame under it]the cage then has to be mounted to the chassis and dosnt require the 2 diags to tunnel. what else is needed are ,a window net, padding anywhere drivers helmet can contact[pge 203], and the instaler should put tabs for required shoulder harness [so its bolted to spine bar and cannot slip off you in case of accident]and if you go faster than 9.99 a chassis cert that should cover the basics hope this helps. bob

the right way[ie legal] for the install is not on tubs, the back bars belong on floor preferably over rails .esp if you ever want to add to it ,the bare min is 5 pts ,for your application.
do it right the first time ,and you wont have to replace it later ie spend more money , if you ever have to add to it. bob

Both helpful replies, thank you. I have another obstacle: I am part paralyzed and can't climb over a door bar. I had a swing out on my Pro street 70 but since my right arm can't reach over and put the secure pin in after closing the door I had my buddy invent a latch. I would prefer to have no door bars and the 4 points behind the seats.

i cant see bottom of your bar ,to tell if its legal but swing bars are legal if done properly,NHRA rule book pges 205-210 ,discribes different types, unfortunatly to run in 11s a 5 pt is the min bar for a car ,and once a bar goes in so should a 5 pt restraining system[ie approved shoulder harnesses]if running faster than 11.99

you can run to 10.00 flat with a 5-point roll bar provided the floor, firewall or frame isn't modified (can run wheel tubs or minitubs). With a roll-bar, a window net isn't required, although the tabs mentioned for the harness and the padding anywhere the driver's head can contact the bar are required. The 5-point means you can have the main hoop, the 2 back bars(or down bars), the bar going across the main hoop for support behind the seats (also provides the mounting location for the 5-point harness shoulder belts) and one driver door bar. The driver door bar can be on a swingout, but it must pass the driver at a midpoint between the shoulder and the elbow. NRC's pictures of the sidebar looks more like what should be NHRA legal than SUX2BU, but that's just based on what I see every week at a NHRA-owned facility going through tech. You can check out my roll bar in my nova at my webshots link below in my sig, and I'd check out www.nhra.com for pictures and more spec info!

NHRA's website just has the basics which are http://www.nhra.com/contacts/tech_faq.html. You'll need a rule book which you get when joining or you can get it online from a link on that same page.

Also, as an FYI, if you have a rollbar, you must have a 5 pt harness - regardless of ET.
