I looked it up, I understand the difference between the M and SA rated helmet, but can an M helmet be used for drag racing an 11 second street car?
For those that don't know, the M stands for motorcycle, the SA is for auto racing. It seems the main difference is SA is fire rated tested and multi impact for roll bars. M helmets are not, and are required to have a larger field of view.
I asked the local autocross track and they say any Snell rated helmet is OK for autocross. Haven't been able to get an answer for drag racing yet.

Thank you. Interesting they went all the way back to 2000 in 2011.
There are a lot more "M" helmets out there than there are SA rated helmets.
BTW, I used to race a 1967 Camaro back in the 80's. Had a lot of success and a lot of fun. Now I need to learn how to race a manual trans.

As mentioned above, yes you can use a M-rated helmet as well as S-rated. If you are looking to go out and buy one, I'd recommend an S version for drag racing; the extra $ is worth it in my opinion for a helmet that includes fire protection as well as being designed for roll bar impact versus a motorcycle based helmet. There are several sources where you can buy a S rated full face helmet (required at 9.99 and quicker by NHRA) for $300 or less. Buy a 2010 and it'll be good til 2022.
