Default Lightweight Defrost Setup....

This winter I plan on removing a few pounds off my car and getting rid of the heater box to get better access to the rear header bolts and spark plugs. I was just going to knock off the engine bay side of the heater box and install a flat plate and leave the heater box on the inside, but after reading Studderin's diet thread I came up with a little bit different idea.

Rather than reuse the stock squirrel cage fan, like Studderin's setup, why not use the Probe heater core and fasten a couple computer fans to the bottom to force the air through the heater core and on to the windshield.

The only problem that I see is that the computer fans don't really push a lot of air (~70 cfm per fan), but they only weigh about 5 ounces each.

What do you guys think? Is the stock squirrel cage fan a better option, or would the computer fans actually work?

Unfortunately you probably wouldn't know until you installed them. But I can tell you this - the breeze coming off of a computer fan is hardly a fart so I have my doubts.

Giving me something to think about. I figured it wouldn't move alot of air, but the fans in the link would and then I would only need one instead of using 2.

I would just hate to have to pull the dash and switch to a setup like Studderin if the computer fans weren't enough. Maybe I'll grab a couple of the fans in the link and see in person how much air they move.

It was super easy for me. I called summit and ordered their little heater box that has two holes. Now I have defrost and one for the wife's feet. It weighs either 9 or 11 pounds and that's all the brackets and wiring. Hooked it up to my factory controls and it's super stealth. Plus I went to menards to get a sheet of aluminum for the delete plate and made it myself.

I have considered that, but it costs money haha. Probe heater core is ~$40, the fan could be free if I reuse the stock one and it will weigh less than 11#s I hope, hopefully closer to 6#s. I'm going to also remove the HVAC controls and hook the fan to a switch thats hidden in the center console.

BTW I just used the probe heater core because I had it laying around. I and alot of other GTP I worked on we used them as a heat exchanger bolted under the supercharger. From the IC kit ZZP sells, you could use any heater core, maybe even your stock one?

I hear ya on that, but the straight outlets and a local hook-up at the parts stores makes a different heater core a cheap choice. and my heater core has 125k miles on it so its a little insurance against leaks.

Thanks for posting up the great details on your diet thread, I have been lurking for a while and gathering ideas
