Default Cutting Up Radiator Support Metal

I have been wanting to cut out the front of my car so I can eventually stand up the radiator and cut some weight right now. I have an LT1 car and am in the process of fitting an LS1 lid and have to cut it up to make it fit anyway.

So my plan is to cut the whole section out and weld in a tube across the front and box in the sides. Then I can make some mounts for the lid and mount it a little lower than it is currently.

I also plan on cutting out the lower radiator support and building a tubular mount that also mounts the air dam since my car is a street car. But in order to do the lower mount I need to purchase a tubing bender.

So what have you guys done on your cars? I have seen some pics from some turbo cars, but not too many still using the rad in the stock location.

I'm going to try to start cutting this weekend, but I need to bring the welder from my dads shop before I can really do anything.

If anyone has pics or some insite I would appreciate it

Here is mine. My lower support is cut out also. You will probably find a lot more pic in the forced induction section since lots of guys stand up there rads for turbo kits

Thanks for the pics guys

a98ws6-what tubing bender do you have? And good idea on mounting the radiator with tabs like that. Have you had any problems with it being mounted solid?

Not sure on the bender. Its my buddys dads. The radiator will still get more bracing to support it. Its just tacked in right now.

Not sure on the part number off the top of my head. Its a Griffen. If you do a search on here, its the same one most of the turbo guys use.

An ls1 lid will not clear the stock hood unless the radiator is laid back, I don't see how you could make an ls1 lid clear at all with the radiator stood up. Look at the above pics, nobody is running a lid with a stood up radiator.

Love your cutting the weight off the front thread btw

If I stand up the rad I wasn't going to use a lid. But I have to cut the support out to fit the lid either way so I figured why not throw up a thread to see if it had been done. I don't plan on standing up the rad right now, but if I need to replace my rad I will stand it up at that point and get rid of the lid.

Thanks man, I'll try to stay motivated on the weight removal thread. It's been hard with my new schedule at work

Your less than 2900? HOW would that happen if you still have a complete front end and way more weight in it than he does?
