Default Battery driver side trunk mount?

Has anybody mounted their battery in their trunk on the driver side? Could this be done and still pass tech at the track? I want to do this because I'm going to have my nitrous bottle mount in the spare tire well and I want to mount my fuel tank for my stand alone where the battery currently is.

You can mount it anywhere back there as long as its in a NHRA approved box or behind a bulkhead separating that compartment from the drivers compartment. Ofcourse an on/off or push/pull switch would be needed to be accessed from outside the back of the car to be NHRA legal as well.

Do you need a bulkhead/box even if it's gel type?

Yes you do, no matter the type of battery.

8:1 BATTERIES
All batteries must be securely mounted; must be of sufficient
capacity to start vehicle at any time. Batteries may not be relocated
into the driver or passenger compartments. Rear firewall of .024-
inch steel or .032-inch aluminum (including package tray) required
when battery is relocated in trunk. In lieu of rear firewall, battery
may be located in a sealed .024-inch steel, .032-inch aluminum, or
NHRA-accepted poly box. If sealed box is used in lieu of rear
firewall, box may not be used to secure battery and must be vented
outside of body. Relocated battery(s) must be fastened to frame or
frame structure with a minimum of two 3/8-inch-diameter bolts.
OEM located batteries without complete OEM hold-down hardware
must be secured to OEM battery box/tray using the same 3/8-inchdiameter bolt hold-down method described in previous sentence.
(“J” hooks prohibited or must have open end welded shut.) Metal
battery hold-down straps mandatory. Strapping tape prohibited. A
maximum of two automobile batteries, or 150 pounds combined
maximum weight (unless otherwise specified in Class
Requirements), is permitted. Maximums may vary according to
Class Requirements.

yes. still need a bulkhead or a box. The problem is fitting a box in that area. I fit a battery in that area with no problem, but the box wouldn't fit. I know that taylor makes a smaller size box that might be able to fit there, but I havent tried it.

I did it in the ttop well on the passenger side. Would leave plenty of room for a bottle. I lay my ttops on top of it with a towel around the glass.

If you need a shutoff switch, does it have to be visible? As in, could you have it under the bumper or something? I guess a stupid question considering what it is for, only place I could think of putting it that it wouldn't look out of place is in the keyhole of the rear panel.

To be NHRA legal yes it has to be visible. In the case of an accident track crew needs to be able to easily see it.

8:4 MASTER CUTOFF
Mandatory when battery is relocated, or as outlined in Class Requirements. An electrical power cutoff switch (one only) must be installed on the rearmost part of each vehicle and be easily accessible from outside the car body. This cutoff switch must be connected to the positive side of the electrical system and must stop all electrical functions including magneto ignition. The off position must be clearly indicated with the word “OFF.” If switch is “push/pull” type, “push” must be the action for shutting off the electrical system, “pull” to turn it on. Any rods or cables used to activate the switch must be minimum 1/8-inch diameter. Plastic or keyed switches prohibited. Switches and/or controls must be located behind rear wheels on rear-engine dragsters.

What is the biggest sized box that is NHRA legal that can fit in the driver side area in the trunk? The passenger side has my bottle mounted there.

Taylor 48300 box is 9.5 x 8.25 x 7.75 but the 5/16 hardware would need to be replaced with 3/8" to make it NHRA legal and the plastic hold down straps would need to be replaced with metal. A Braile 3121 battery is 6.6 x 5.2 x 6.8 and would fit in that box.

Put the car an a scales first. I was going move my battery from the stock location to the rear. Once on the scales, I noticed the right was light, with the battery in the stock location. To get the car to scale correctly, with me in the car, I had to have a full fuel load and add 90lbs to the right rear. Set car up at 53% front and 47% rear. I do not know how to really tell you much better the car launched other than, WOW! Start at post 326.
