Default launch tips M6 ET Drag Stiff sdewall

No more drag radials for this guy. Just got my first set of slicks (MT 3053S) and I'm looking for some tips on launching my 3700 lb GTO. Anything helps. How much should the clutch be slipped, and what RPM works best for my set up typically (I realize every car will be a little different).

Im no expert nor do I drive a GTO, but usually a slick prefers a clutch dump rather than a slip like a dr would need. Depending on how long your do your burnout and where you cam makes its highest torque you may want to dump the clutch in the range of 4-6k rpm. You want to get the tires sticky and dump the clutc to get a hair of spin to wrinkle the sidewalls and get the wheel speed up and get "on the tire" quickly.

Since its a gto Id hope you did some upgrading of the rear end to handle the slicks, they are certainly a different animal than dr's. Hope this helps!

Don't slip, dump it as high as you can without spinning. For me it's all the way up to redline at 6500 on my car, anything less my nose drops and car bogs.

You do want it to spin a little, but in a controlled manner. Deadhooking an m6 is going to bog, you want it to spin slightly (only a few revolutions of the tire) to keep the motor in its powerband and get the tire spinning to un wrinkle it. A slick unlike a radial can spin and gain traction rather than blow the tires off like a dr will when it spins.

Start at 5500 RPMs and work your way up. I leave at 5900 on the exact same tire. Track prep and front suspension / weight transfer will also come into play as well. Trial and error is about the only way to go honestly.

Do not slip the clutch or it will die. You must spin or you will bog or break something. Your most effective launch rpm is certainly above 5k, probably closer to 6k. You need to find your optimal tire pressure. MT recommends higher pressure in their slicks than others. Start at 18-20 psi and work down. Let your sixty be your guide.

I've been working on my launch all summer with this setup. I've learned the 60' time is nice to know, but the 330' split is the REAL indication of how efficiently you've launched.

I have a 347 H/C/I, T56, and 4.30's in the Moser 9". I typically use 17psi and leave at 6300 rpm. I've 60'd a best of 1.55 and nearly always 60 a 1.57-1.60. Controlled spin is the key, and the slick will recover as mentioned before so if you spin stay in the gas. My best runs down the track have actually felt like a "soft" launch but resulted in the nose staying up and engine rpm not going below 4700. (Per the data log)

Good luck and have fun, seat time at the track is the key!

I can't get my QTPs to work with dumping. Slipping I can get 1.76 60's, dumping the best has gotten like a 1.88 - doesn't matter if it is at 6000 or 4000 or what. It just spins way too much.

My 330' is shitty - it is usually 5.1/5.2, and this is killing my 1/8-1/4 times. It bogs after that launch, and it is killing me.

What are you running for tire pressure with the qtp's?

I've tried everything from 25-20-17-15 in that order and nothing seems to work. I do a decent 2nd gear burnout, they just keep spinning. I've only got them to dead hook once I think and obviously that bogged the car right down.

ya DR either spin and keep spinning or bog, there alot harder to use.
what clutch do you have? if you can launch at high rpms do that. as much as you can. I dont do a side step. But dont ride it, just keep your foot on the pedal and let it off fast but still controlling it. Shoot for 1-3 tire revs, Vid and play it back slow. so its dosnt hook and pull the motor down. I use tire pressuer to do that. down to 13 (tires cold will be 14-15) if the track sucks. been as high as 18 on them with a great track (prept event)

Thanks for all the input guys, really helpful stuff. I found 5500 dump to work best for me, It was my first time on slicks, and only my second time ever at the track so Ive got a lot of practice ahead of me. Anything lower than 5000 on the 2 step and I bogged really bad. 6000 dump just spun the tires so I let out figuring I messed up, but next time Ill stay in it and see how that works out. Best run below, all others before this were really bad lol, like 2.1 60' etc. Wasn't really worried about my RT.
