Default Question regarding tubes and rim screws

Hey guys, quick questions...

Do tubes add stability in the top end of the track?

How often do you have to fill up the tire with air if you don't have tubes?

Do you have to use tubes if you screw the slick to the rim?

At what point, 60ft wise, do you need to use screws because of the slick turning in the rim?

Any passionate arguements either way?

My rims are already drilled for screws...I guess it would look pretty ugly if I didn't screw them in

Thanks

Andy

--If you run the slicks at low psi, yah.

How often do you have to fill up the tire with air if you don't have tubes?
--every 2-5 weeks depends sometimes you get lucky and sometimes some are leakers

Do you have to use tubes if you screw the slick to the rim?
--no

At what point, 60ft wise, do you need to use screws because of the slick turning in the rim?
--i have gone 1.48's without them spinning

Any passionate arguements either way?

I ran screw'd rims without tubes and at around 10psi they would leak ALOT.
It is a crap shoot what is going to happen with screws. Might take weeks, might
be flat in one day.

I run tubes in all my tires now, it is alot less headache.

I'm running a 3554 tube in my steamrollers. Really never considered running them w/o tubes because of how big they are. My biggest hangup on tubes is that they're dead weight. Moreover, it's unsprung weight (and rotational), so it's even worse. However, I'll sacrifice some extra weight on my car for some top end stability.

I don't run tubes. I run 11 to 10.5 psi in my 30x9x15 slicks. I screwed the slicks to the rims and my tires don't leak air.

I key is to rub dish washing soap on the inside of the slick before you mount them.

i only ran tubes one time and that was because i got a nail in my slick that i could not get to patch correctly. the dam thing would leak down every night so i put tubes in them. once those slicks wore out, i did not install the tubes the second set of tires. they are a pain in the *** to mount and demount if you do it yourself.

i ran tubes in my 28" et drags last year, but no screws. they were nice and stable at all times and did not leak any air at all.

this year i have 26X11.5 et streets with not tubes or screws. i bought the setup used so don't knew who mounted them, but they leak really bad, they will be totally flat in less than a week.

at 12 psi they are pretty hairy in 3rd and 4th gear going down the track, but it doesn't bother me too much.

i have some wheel screws laying around, prolly gonna take the tires off and screw them and re mount them, but no tubes

Tubes without screws is bad,the valve stem will rip off.

The extra weight KILLS me, but it is a better solution in my book.

Everyone knows how I HATE WEIGHT!!!!!!

If you would've moved the tire on the wheel, you would have.

I figured as much weight is out of my car, I'll sacrifice the rotational weight of the tubes for some stability on the top end. I'm not running your average 26x10.5 tire either.

I have a set of MT slicks mounted without tubes and they are rim screwed. With 12 lbs of air in them they would go flat in less than a week. I took the tires and rims to my very good friends tire facility to have some rim seal installed to solve the problem. Thats what I thought anyway.

I got a call from Burt "my very good friend" and Burt said the tires are still leaking and they are not leaking from the rim seal, rim screws or the valve stem. I said whats left brother? He said they are leaking through the sidewall. Thousands of little bubbles.

I saw the thousands of little soap bubbles comming from the sidewall with my own 2 eyes. Same thing happened to my brothers slicks a month ago. Hard to believe but this DOES happen.

I now have tubes installed in these leaky set of slicks. I'll use these for the brackets.

I have another set without tubes I'll be running next time I get to the track.

Yes it is a little squirlley at the big end without tubes but not too bad.

Tom
