Best rpm to shift at? Is it right before redline?

What's the best rpm to shift at at the strip? This is assuming you have 3.42's. If I understand correctly we make peak power at 5500rpm and after that it falls off. Now I know most people take it almost up to redline (5900rpm or so), but I've seen some guys say that they shift at 5500rpm and I've seen them get some pretty good times doing that. Some of you 10's and 11's M6 guys should be able to answer this.

I try to get it as close to the ~6200 rpm redline as possible. It is harder to be consistent with the shifting unless you get a shift light. I haven't hit the limiter yet while on the track (but did on the street a few times until I got the shift timing down).

The stock tach's are dogs, you can either get a new tach with a shiftlight or just a shiftlight, I have the 5" autometer tach (silver) it looks pretty good and works like a charm...impossible to hit the limiter with its accuracy

McRat, where'd your post go? Can you put it up again? I want to copy that chart.
Thanks

The Autometer #3905 is really nice. Tach and light combo and you can dial in up to 8K.

Is it possible that the tach is off on mine because I seem to hit the limiter when it looks like 6100 or so? It's hard to tell when I'm concentrating on everything else though so maybe I'm just seeing things.

My current problem is not hitting the limiter, but relearning to shift higher after having the limiter raised after doing heads and cam.
I am making great power all the way up to the limiter 6600 but I can't get out of the routine of shifting at 5900 to avoid the limiter.
I reset the shiftlight to 6350 (so I don't tag the limter) but the mind still wants to shift at 5900.
Oh well. I know there is still hidden time with just learning how to wait a split second longer between shifts....lol

The Harlan shiftlight seems to be the best right now, if you don't want the tach to go with it. You can order them from him now with about a 1 week turnaround time. I know someone here will post his website.
