Default To tube or not to tube?

Last set of slicks I didn't bother, since I'm putting some new tires on I have a chance to add tubes. Other than keeping the slicks from going flat, what will they do for me? I guess they add another 2-3# of rotating weight per tire?

Mine didn't weight that much when I put them in. They are supposed to allow you to run low pressure and maintain a good contact patch I think.

What happen to "Tubes are for sissies?"

I never run tubes, and never intend to. You can blow tubes in your slicks (been there, done that), and then what do you do? Hope someone has a machine and a new tube at the track? Without tubes, if your tires leak a bit, you just get em up to pressure before you go up to the lanes...and they won't blow out.

Of course, they are more weight, more money, and more hassle. I've run 9 psi in 28x9 M/T ET Streets with no problems at all...and no tubes.

Personally....I wouldn't do it.

They could help prevent a loss of air if the tire spins on the rim during launch. Other than that I don't see how they would help other than keeping them from leaking air through the sidewalls.

I would not recommend running tubes without bolting the tires to the rim. When you have tire spin with tubes you generally will either cut the tube or damage the valve stem. This happens because either tube is going to turn with the tire or remain in place as the tire spins against the tube. Just something you might want to think about if your going to use tubes.

I've never cared for them, just wanted to make sure nothing has changed since last time I bought slicks.

I like to pull some tubes every now and again.
