Default Breaking out on the Brakes!

Last two events I raced I've broke out by a tiny margin, .001 and .003. I couldn't figure out how this was happening because I would dial hard, stage deep, and be on the brakes at the line till it just hit me that my front air dam must be trippin the beams. Does anyone have any suggestions to prevent this? What about removing the air dam or shortening it?

Add a stripe taker(google it) or tighten up your front shocks (compression)if you have da shocks.Your front end is dipping down when your on the brakes and tripping the beams.

Exactly, but I'm running stock original springs and shocks. The stripe taker or beam tripper is in the back of my head.

Is your mph up when this happens? What about your last segment time? Those should tell you if it's the air dam.

Ahhh, good idea I will have to do some comparison on time slips. That should verify thanks.

MPH would be down, not up since there is a shorter distance.

But since he said he is on the brakes every run, MPH is a moot point.

If the car is tripping the beams with the front end, the MPH will be higher than normal. You are correct about decreasing the distance. Distance = Rate x Time. If you clip the beams with the front end, you are actually decreasing the distance which in turn decreases the time between timing blocks and represents a faster MPH.

Typically when mine does the same thing, its worth about .02 et and a mph or two. Of course thing will vary slightly depending on the speed of the car.

I used a old mud flap off of peterbilt. Mounted it on a piece of angled aluminum from lowes and bolted it to the bottom of front bumper cover with bolts. It hangs down about 4 inches off of the ground. Solved my break out problem. The mud flap is flexible enough that it doesn't break off when loading or unloading the car from the enclosed trailer. I made a nice strip taker out of plexiglass and it broke when I unloaded the car at the track. It passed tech at div.3 bracket finals.

That's not a bad idea. How wide did you make it? That will effect reaction time correct? With that I can leave my air dam on and just add/remove the flap at the track. Thanks.

This use to happen to me all the time until I got some double adjustable Afco shocks from Madman. Problem solved!

It's about 8 inches long. 5 inches wide and it's 4.5 inches from the ground. It does not effect reaction time, but it will make your E.T. about .02 quicker if it trips the beam.
