Optimal amount of gas to race w/?
It depends on how hard your car launches. The guys at S.A.M. were having some problems with the fuel backing off of the pump pick-up when they ran 1/8 tank and cut 1.3x-1.4x 60' times, so they added more fuel, maybe 1/4 tank. If you are launching like a normal car, I would keep at least 1/8 tank in there.

EXACTLY!
At the track with some ET STreets, I put it between the 1/4 and 1/2 mark (that's probably really less than a quarter tank).
But on the street, often I will fill the tank up. Even with ET Streets I spin a lot, even babying it out of the hole.
Those issues may not apply to you. If you are stock and have some DR's, at the track you might try fine-tuning your launch with about a quarter tank. On the street, traction is even more of an issue... try between 1/2 and 3/4 by the guage. That's proabably about half full. Practice leaning into the throttle for minimal wheel-spin, but WOT by aroudn 5000 RPMs.
Try different scenarios like that. What I'm telling you is only an example of what you might try.
Getting a good hole-shot can be as much a matter of what technique the DRIVER is comfortable with as what is best for the car... definitely a combination of the two. <img src="gr_grin.gif" border="0">
