The winner is the 68' 426 Hemi powered Barracuda. 11.80's on radials, right off the showroom floor. Nothing else even comes close. All other cars ran high 12's and high 13's. Even the BB Vette's ran in the 13's.

I've been going to sites and talking with people about these cars and the Hemi's ruled.

Unless I can find out if the 427 AC Cobra ran faster with it's stock tires. It should be quicker because it weighs less and had more power & torque.

Getting closer!

Check this,

For the HP they produced back then, they sure were pigs for quickness.

We're gonna argue again Steve. The 365hp motor was never offered in the nova. The only difference between the 350 and the 365 horsepower version was the 350 had a hyd lifters and the 365 had solids.
Add fuel injection to the 365 and you got the 327cid 375hp Corvette engine.

In 1963 I was 12 years old and the small town I grew up in had a Chevrolet dealership. When a transporter came into town I would run to see what the driver was going to unload. Corvette's. 409 Implala SS's, Nova's and Chevelle's and plenty of high octane leaded gas...

It was a great time to be a kid crazy about cars.

I use to own a 66 nova SS 327-350hp/4sp with the factory 12 bolt, buckets with no console, 4 wheel drum brakes with a single resevoir master with no power assist, no power steering, no ac. A total stripper. It had a factory aluminum intake, holley carb, hydraulic cam and double hump 461 style heads.I've never heard of or seen a 365 horse version in the nova. It was very fast for a stock small block and I wish I still had it. White with black interior just like my 01 Formula. It handled and drove like total **** so I sold it back in 88 and bought a new 5.0

I agree with the Hemi Dart being the badass. But you would have to compare it to something like a Hennesy Viper as it was technically modd. by Hurst. As far as normal musclecars anyone could get, I would say Hemi E-Bodies and B-Bodies, 440 6 pack of the same, LS6 Chevells, 396/375 hp Novas, GSX Buicks. All these did mid 12s or so. They all ran in the 108 to 112 mph range. ET is largely off-line traction, MPH is a good indication of HP. I didn't include the COPOs are they were hard to get, same with the ZL1 stuff. Had a friend who tried to buy a COPO Camaro, could not get one ordered. He bought a Hemi Cuda off the lot, that was the difference. I didn't include Ford as the fastest thing they had besides the Thunderbolt or AC Cobra was probably the 67-70 428 Mustangs. While they were fast, I don't think they were up to the Mopars or GM cars. Remember JMO.

With damn near 400 RWHP and 400+ RWTQ the AC Cobra had to be in the 11's if not 10's.

I just can't find out if they were true PRODUCTION cars.

I would love to have that sittin in my driveway right now. I like the light blue color or black better though. a 66 is truely my dream car. there was one at our towns depot days red with red interior, looked like it just came off the showroom floor.

Box stock production car? Generally affordable? I'd say 70 Chevelle SS LS6 M22 4.10 or One of the Hemi Mopars.

Cobras and stuff like that were super pricey. Certainly a 427 Cobra could be faster. What was the pricetag, $8K in the mid 60's?

I remember reading about one of 2 twin supercharged 427 Shelby Cobras. (I think it had 2) Anyways Bill Cosby got one, and I don't know who got the other. Some idiot who bought it for the collector value filled the tank with deisel fuel, but supposedly it never got ran thru the carbs. The current owner was supposed to rebuilt it, but I haven't heard anything since then (it's been a few years) While 2 doesn't exactly count as production, that has to be the baddest musclecar made that I've ever heard of.

My vote goes for something Hemi, or 427 Chevy powered. Wasn't there then so I don't know

At work I have a link saved to some database of 1/4 mile times of factory cars. I'll dig it out tomorrow.

I believe that total 427 Cobra production was around 350 units spread over 4 years. Good enough to meet SCCA's definition of Production, but probably not yours.

I think it was production. If so, then the 490HP/480RWTQ optioned AC COBRA is easily the fastest production car EVER made, 1960'2 and any other year in history. It was a high 10 very low 11 second car right out of the box, with stock tires.

Still trying to verify this.

Didn't the 68 Hemi Polara run 11.60's off the showroom floor?

From what i can remember from reading muscle car review, which takes test numbers from when those cars were new goes as follows.1 66 cobra 12.20s 2 67 427/425 corvette12.60s 3 69 440-6BBR roadrunner 12.90s 4 69 375/396 camaro ss 13.10s 5 69 427/zl1 camaro 13.20s . I remember the magazine saying the reason the 396 beat the 427 is that it cam with 4.88s to the 427s 3.73s or 4.10s?

A friend of mine OWNS a 69' GTX 440 6 pack NOW and it runs mid 11's on slicks and low 10's on the gas....Full body and totally restored. I'm not sure if the motor is built to factory specs though. VERY nice car.

Oh I forgot to add my dad bought a '69 GTX new, it had the 440 supercommando 375hp with an auto. He holds strongly to claims that he ran 12.8's at 115mph back in his heyday. He also claims his only street racing loss came at the hands of an 427 equipped Chevelle which came with no warranty and was intended for drag use. Any idea what engine this Chevelle may have had? He said he lost by buslengths.

Nope, but add slicks and you'd be close. They came with Hooker Comp headers. Most of them were delivered in May, cost about 4500-4700 bucks. Just in time for the race in E-town. Ronnie Sox went up against another guy in a Hemi Barracuda, both driver's beat the NHRA record, Ronnie won the race though. Now SS/B is owned by these cars. Never been a car like it before, never will be again.

Think about it, a Dart with single pane glass, no sound deadener, no backseat, aluminium body panels and hood, with a 12.5:1 race Hemi pushing over 500 hp 4.88 gears and the battery in the trunk stock

I have a hard time believing that he was running high 12's w/ the 375 HP version of the 440 cid. I might buy into it if it was the 6-pack.
As for the 427-equipped Chevelle, it was most likely a COPO car or Yenko. Yenko's were COPO's, but he modded the cars to his liking past a 427 cid production car. If it was a COPO only, the car would've had a VERY plain-Jane appearance...very likely to have dog-dish hubcaps.

That's it I remember him saying it had "plain jane" hubcaps. I don't doubt the 12 second times its the trap speeed that I argue with him about. Maybe he ran 105 and thought it was 115?

Default Re: What's the fastest 1/4 mile stock car built in the 60's?

my father owns a 66 L79. i have only heard of one or possibly 2 being made in 67 (all myths probably), but it has 462 double hump heads (2.02 intakes) and a hydraulic roller. its got a 12 bolt w/ 3.73's, and brakes that you are almost better w/ out (drums on all 4) w/ that engine in such a light car, that thing flies. it may not be quite as fast as the 427 chevy's and 426 hemi's, but for something w/ way less cubes, its pretty darn fast. ive driven it, nothing like the ls1 camaro, but in a straight race, i would put my money on the nova...anyday (assuming the camaro is basically stock more or less). now, imo, either the zl1's, or one of those super-stock hemi's or one of the 427 cobras would be at the top of my list (all super rare). w/ any traction, those (and all 60's muscle cars) are complete beasts.
