Can I use a flux core welder to install a 6 point cage?

Can you? Yes - will it be legal? no.

Mild needs to be Mig'd and Chromoly needs to be Tig'd

Yeah, and the rules say specifically that the welds have to be free of slag. I mean, a 6 point doesn't have to be inspected, so technically it would probably pass at most tracks, because they just look to see if you have a cage in your car period.

I wouldn't hesitate at all if it was mine. Just check the settings to see how thick of material your particular welder is capable of welding so you'll know it's capable of burning in properly.

Flux core wire IS mig..

I run flux core more often than not these days in my Miller mig.

Have u ever welded with flux core? After the weld cools u just tap the weld with a slag hammer or even a screwdriver and it falls right off leaving a very nice weld. If you can weld that is. Sometimes it just falls off without even having to tap it.
So weld it up, let it cool, loosen slag and sweep or vacuum it up.

Section 4:10

MIG wire feed or TIG only.

http://www.nhra.com/UserFiles/file/G...egulations.pdf

no where does it state flux or stick as being approved processes.

Flux core is not MIG! Just because a machine will do both processes doesn't mean that they are the same.

Ask any chassis shop if they'd flux core weld and chassis and/or safety parts.

Lots of good info here: http://www.yellowbullet.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=218335

MIG is Metal Inert Gas so if you remve the Inert Gas from the process you are no longer MIG welding.

Flux core wire IS mig! I've been welding mig for 15 years.
My miller welder is a wire feed MIG welder, and I've ran hard wire as they call it and flux core wire which is what I've been usually the last good while. I run CO2 gas with both wire types.

I never said a thing about stick welding.

On top of my use in my own shop several places I've worked over the years also run flux core wire in their wire feed welders in the production of very heavy equipment that takes a hell of a beating.

If you run flux core wire it is NOT mig..... If you run "hard wire" as you call it with a GAS that's mig... You can run flux core from a mig welder yes... But it's NOT mig welding because there is no gas... And you do not run a gas with flux core wire... The flux core is why you do not use gas.. I'm sorry you have been doing it wrong for 15 years..

The competency of the welder is much more important then the process. I wouldnt have a problem welding one with flux wire because I know what the hell im doing. Once the slag is removed you cant tell it wasn't straight wire.

Haha, your so lost its amusing... Yes there are flux core wire that doesnt require gas but there are flux core wire u do use gas with. I'm sorry u argued with someone that knows what they are talking about when obviously u are just regurgitating incorrect info from somewhere. What's YOUR credentials anyhow?

Knowing what your doing is the important part.I know a guy building a full caged gasser, frame and all and every bit of the welding is 7018. I wouldnt hesitate using flux core to weld a cage, but I've been welding for 30 years.
