Default if you crash on the strip...

Are you screwed?

Insurance won't cover your damages right?

How do you guys justify the risk?

I drag raced my car one time at irwindale but I've been thinking about that and all the what ifs...

I always heard that you can have the car taken outside the track after an accident, that way it didn't actually "happen" there

Thats what I would do

Would probably be a good idea to remove the slicks first though. But yeah, get it towed somewhere far away from a track.

You really need to read your insurance policy to make sure that recreational type events are not specifically excluded. If it is not specifically excluded you should be ok. You should also be careful if the accident was not your fault. If another car were to lose control and hit your car, and their insurance policy prohibits them from being there you might not get anything. This of course is only if the car you are racing even has insurance. I don't believe an offroad, race only car needs to have any kind of insurance.

A friend of mine got himself in a little trouble because of this a while back. He had a 4X4 truck and his insurance policy specifically stated if the truck was xxx amount of miles off road then insurance would not recover any kind of repairs to his vehicle or another vehicle involved. He was further off road then the policy allowed and since the rangers/police were involved with the report it was impossible to cover up. He continued to make payments for what he owed on the totalled truck.

most insurance will not cover a wreck as a result of a "speed contest" which is what drag racing is considered.

I've also heard that the insurance will pay if it's not a competition...ie test and tune.

Don't even think of quoting on that though.

99% of insurance companies have a clause that does not make them liable for damages and injuries that occur at a racetrack or during a racing event (street racing, autoX, road racing, whatever). That's just part of it. Not like my insurance company would do anything if I turned in the expense claim on my car.

I have had policies from two different companies and neither will cover a race car once it is on the racing surface. Currently I use Kincaid. Quite a lot of race cars are lost to theft and trailering accidents, so insurance is as important as anything else in my racing program.

Do they put people in jail for insurance fraud or just probation?

I hit a deer on the dragstrip at 120mph (really), was able to drive the car a few miles away and said I hit the deer on the road that the track was named after. The deer crap, blood and fur all over the car made it a believable story

I was good friends with my agent at the time and after it was fixed I asked him what would happen if you crashed at a dragstrip during time runs, he pretty much said if you crash at the dragstrip you are screwed. Racing against the clock is considered a 'competitive event' and that would be that.

not necessarily true, a good friend of mine called them up when he blew his rear at the track, and they picked his car up from the pits and drove it all the way to his house (75 miles away).

Believe me, crap like that effects everyone who buys car insurance. I would also suggest that it is not a wise man that suggests such things to all of the young people that frequent these sights.

Didn't know this was a morality thread...I thought it was about what happens when you junk your **** at the track.

It's sorta interesting that the insurance company will treat a wreck while street racing the same as a wreck on a drag strip. There goes one argument against racing @ the track. When I was younger, this was always a concern with me since my rates were so high.

If you crash at the strip, your are typically in a low 9 second and quicker car. At that point, those kinds of cars typically aren't insured, so unless your are in an 8 second car, I would't worry about crashing.

FWIW, if someone puts a 12 or 13 second car into the wall, they deserve to crash and shouldn't be driving!
