T56 vs 31 spline axles breaking.
Good Morning Everyone..
I wanted to see your opinion on a situation Im having.. Some months ago I pulled the axles( Moser 31 spline) on my MWC 9inch (stock lenght). Turns out one of the axles splines had twisted. At this point the car hadnt been race for 1 year.
So I talked to the guys at MWC and expressed my concern about the splines of the axles sitting partially only inside the spool. You can clearly see the wear mark on the good axle and the twist point on the other one.. [I will attach pictures]
Well I ended up upgrading to Pro Race 31 spline with the same lenght of the previous ones. I didnt upgrade because I didnt wanna pull out the center section. Yesterday I went to the track for the 2nd time..and 1 axle broke on the 1st 6k rpm launch... Car is on motor still and trapping 126mph. That was the 3rd launch on those axles. First one was a 4900 rpm launch, 2nd one was a 3rd gear launch and 3rd this 6k launch..
My question is how much in lenght should each axle actually be hugged inside the spool..
I will talk to MWC on monday and try to pull the axles to see the carnage... Driver side was the one that broke...

Yes that will be my next step, however I wanted to get an imput from you guys on how far the axles are sitting inside the spool. The one that broke was the Driver side which is the same as the one pictured above that previously twisted.

The other seems to be sitting good inside the spool as per the wear pattern. Im just afraid the one that keeps twisting/breaking is a bit short and is putting to much stress on the tip of the axle. Thanks

I can't remember exactly how far mine was in the spool but it looks close to the same from what I remember looking at. You might have been able to get more in there if the axle was longer. All I can say is measure the housing then both axle lengths from where housing seal would have met the outside edge of the housing. I've heard some bad things about mosers axles and products in general.

I've been on 31 spline axles and a posi unit for probably 4 years. Several passes from almost 7k on a stock bottom end and now I'm at 571/522 and haven't had any problem. I'm running strange axles. I may need to pull them and check after this.

Im running 1/2 inch strange wheel bolts all around. I havent weighted the car but it should be around 3300 race weight and has mid 400s rwhp in a mustang dyno. Traps are 126 mph.

The Pro Race axles are stronger for sure, but it is quite obvious you are well beyond the capability of a 31 spline diameter, no matter the material. When you purchased the rearend and wanted a posi unit for a street driven car the only descent option was a 31 spline clutch type posi or a Truetrac. Since then there have been a handful of 35 spline posi units come onto the market and have proven to be a very worthy step in the right direction.
It is no secret, the T56 cars will eat rearend and driveshaft components with ease compared to any auto, and if you have enough power with the weight of these cars it is still tough on even some aftermarket parts.
My best advice at this point is to sell off the complete center section as the cost to change over to 35 will render the case and posi useless, the two biggest cost items in a 9" center. You should be able to get a good chunk of change out of that unit and recoup it toward the new setup, your end out of pocket expense won't be too bad.
