Default Mixing tubing

If I have a car with a mild steel 6 point and upgrade it to a 10 can the upgrade be in moly? Welding isn't a problem. Just need to know if this is legal.
Thanks
Jay

No no no, it will only certify as mild steel, you're going to age different diameters..... Gonna look like a **** show if you do it.

Don't. Just don't do it. Take the opportunity to cut it out and make it nicer.

The 6 point is more than likely 1.75" and a 10 point only needs to be 1.625" .083" wall 4130 No biggie to TIG them together but it would be better to cut it out and start from scratch. Lighter and you can build on it to make the car faster. If it has a mild steel main hoop and mig welding it probably will never cert for anything faster than 8.50.

I didn't know a 10 point could be smaller tubing. I need to study all the rules, this will be my first car with a roll bar/cage in it.
thanks

Just do a 10 point in it and be good to 8.50 right off, best thing you can do. And tell the chassis guy you want to be able to upgrade it to 25.3 later so they do it I. A way that will make that possible later.

There has been some very good advice given in this thread so far. As far as this point i want to clarify something. The Smaller diameter tubing is not due to the points of the cage but the material. You can use 1-5/8 tubing with a Chromoly cage. Any mild steel will still need to be 1-3/4". If you want to add on to your existing cage, you can use mild steel and convert to 10 point. This will be good to cert to 8.50 in either material. If you want the smaller Moly tubing, then you will need to cut out all of your existing stuff and start from scratch

8.50 cages can be 1.625" OD in either mild steel or chromoly materials. Chromoly can be welded to mild steel, but the mild steel cert specs still apply. All mild steel, regardless of OD, must be minimum .118 wall sonic tested thickness to pass cert.

An 8 point full cage is still legal to 8.50, not sure why people call 8 point cages 10 point, sure seems like advertising scheme to me because more is merrier right? A true 10 point cage(additional rear x brace, bay bars, etc) will still cert no better than 8.50.

Do not get a "roll bar"(10.0 legal) confused with a "roll cage"(9.99 and quicker). All roll bars must be 1.75 OD regardless of material type, but are not as of yet required to be certified. Roll cages are to be certified as the car eclipses the sub 10 sec e.t. range, which at that point you will need other safety equipment(window net, etc.) and a competition license as well.

Go chromoly, it's lighter by approx. 34%, requires tig. welding which is far superior to DIY mig stuff and it ads value to your car. Forget mild steel cages, it's ok for a roll bar. The down side is cost, about $7ft. for chromoly and you'll likely have to remove your dash completely and possibly a windshield or more but worth it.
