Default Grinded My Calipers - Need Some Help!

I finished grinding my rears today. I finally got to the point where I mounted the drag-lites (with all lugs and fully torqued down) and didn't see any paint rubbing off and the wheel spun as freely as it could.

My question, am I done??? If I drop the car and go driving, will anything change that may cause the wheel to start dragging again? Did any of you grind extra? (I've got a couple places right now that are mighty thin!!) I just don't want any problems once I drop the car.

Also, anyone have any pics (or advice) on grinding the fronts? Are they worse than the rears???

Thanks!

Mark

Grinding is the nature of the beast with Welds. Drop the car and take some sharp turns....not fast, just sharp. If you still have some drag, go straight back to the garage and grind the metal top and bottom of the calipers. I had to take two test drives with mine, and grind more before the drag was out. There is alot of material in those calipers. Hopefully you didnt get crazy with the grinder on the front of the middle part. You really just need to grind off the outer edge (corner) of the calipers. Keep grinding till it fits. Sure you had your safety glasses on when you did this. That stuff is nasty to your skin, and be very careful washing it off your car...it will scratch the **** out of your pant. I blew mine off with air chuck, then power sprayed it. Dont touch the car till its clean!!!!!
I would get some spacers for the front think 5/16ths. With the spacers you dont need to grind the front. You may want to consider going with some ARP 12mm .590 knurl extended lugs. They have a tensile strenght of 110,000 lbs. They are also 2.5 inches long, so your NHRA legal, and can rub the required open end lug nuts. The studs cost about $50-60 bucks, and the lugs another $50. This will make you legal. Just dont say anything about the spacer.

With the wheels fully torqued and spinning freely off the ground, you should be done. No worries. Re the fronts, dunno about the drag lites. My Centerlines needed no grinding on the front.

Thanks guys!

Yeah, I wore a full front mask, long sleeve shirt and leather gloves. You're right, that stuff got everywhere!!

I was grinding across the whole surface until a say it getting thin in the middle (halfway between the top and the end of the caliper)

I'll grind a little more on the corners before I take it out - than straight to the car wash (already blew it off with compressed air)

Fast SS:

I got the regular Weld open ended lugs for the Draglites and the ARP 12mm long studs for the front. The studs were about $14 a pack (5) from a local speed shop. Are these the ones you're talking about or does ARP have another (better) set? If so, any P# or where to get them??

Thanks!

"Grinded"? Go to school much Mark? <img border="0" alt="[jester]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_jest.gif" />

That's cool to hear. How long did it take you, and how much did you take off?

I finally got my rear-end in over the weekend, so I'm ready to get all the little crap out of the way now. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />

Then it's: <img border="0" alt="[Camaro]" title="" src="graemlins/camaro.gif" />

Tom: No cracks from the peanut gallery . . . It was a loooong day! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" /> The 1st one took about 2 hours and the second 1 less than an hour. (wish I knew now what I didn't know then!!)

Yea, I called ARP and they said those are the longest 12mm they sell. I'm going to post in the other thread and see if anyone has used the 7/16's in the front hub. (ARP sell those that are about 1/2" longer. Just enough!)

I think that that is the only ARP 12mm set you can get. I will call the local speed shop and see if they have multiple part numbers for that application. I run a 12 bolt rearend with 1/2 extended studs, but wanted to make sure he at least was semi-legal for slicks. I also forgot to tell him if he plans on running slicks to be damn sure he has a drive shaft loop....its not just a safety rule, it could save your life!
