Default Dumb question for passing tech

So, an discussion errupted this weekend regarding passing tech for racing. If you're just building a weekend drag car that wont be doing any type of class racing. Do you still need to fulfill all SFI requirements?

I argue that you do. That if your stock car passes tech and run 9.98 youll be kicked off for lack of appropriate SFI equiptment. I.e. harmonic balancer, roll cage, tranny shield, etc etc

Buddy of mine argues what we dont since its just for fun and not NHRA racing.

If its a sanctioned track, you have to have the proper equipment in order to race/compete.

If you don't have it, which you should, don't be surprised if you get told to leave.

Besides, why would you neglect/cheap out on safety?

Put the right equipment on the first time, safety stuff is not an option.

That being said dates on stuff like a tranny shied... if it's never contained a failure should not be an issue.

Track to track varies a lot.
One track I was going to pretty regular (Capital) had a tech guy just take your card, ask what it ran, write a number on your windows, and off you go.
Then, there was a wreck on the track one weekend....when I went back a week or so later, the lady doing tech was all up under, inside, looking in trunk , and under hood....on a low 14-high 13's car
Cecil has always had a stigma about being a strict track, where I go now, but have see a few cars/trucks/ETC that I would NOT want to be next to also.
Ever see a car with slicks being held on with regular nuts and washers as the lugnuts ?
I know some tech in, then head back to the pits and change stuff, so that will never be seen.

Thats scary, im all for fulfilling requirements, but some things seem odd. Like harmonic dampener, whats so bad about the factory piece? Ive seen 1000whp with factory. Or SFI flex plates? Please educate me, i seek knowledge

http://sfifoundation.com/

SFI rated stuff is designed to tighter specs/standards and higher RPM's.

Around here, you need just about everything. They look at your tires to see if there's ANY small checking on the sidewalls, your lug studs have to protrude through the lug nuts front and rear, belts up to date, helmet sticker up to date, No rear wheel caps so they can see your aftermarket axles if your going faster than 11.50? If your battery is relocated it has to be in an SFI/NHRA holding box and get this...cotter pins in your seat belt anchor clips so they can't disconnect themselves, i guess.

Not the bolts, the belt anchor locks. Yep, they want this done.

Look closely again, the cotter pin is just in place to keep the latch from opening and releasing, the belts are anchored with proper hardware. ...lol
The latch is spring loaded in the closed position.
