Default Helmet Qs

What should I look for in a helmet? Where can I find one cheep? I saw some on e-bay, but I need to know what minimum DOT and SNELL numbers are required.
Thanks.

I would get something with at lease an M2000 rating to assure it will be good for a little while. I believe most tracks are still allowing 95 ratings, but if my memory serves correct, 10 years is the most they will go for a snell rating. I am not sure though when an SA snell rating is neccessary. My helmet is an SA2000 and i've never had any trouble at any tracks.

I believe a few sponsors carry the RCI or Bell helmets. They seem to be the least expensive that I have seen.

SA = Automotive application, made to take multiple hits before they are no good
M = Motorcycle application, made to take one hit, then they are no good
Snell ratings are good for 15 years, every 5 years SMF comes out with an improved rating.
Cheap helmets, if you have a cheap head I do not skimp on money when it comes to my head, having said that and if you are serious about safety, you need an SA2000. Ours were purchased from Jegs and Summit Racing.
DOT (US Dept Of Trans) don't mean much at most tracks, some accdept them. There is no classification from DOT, just needs to have the DOT Approved sticker.
Make sure it fits comfortably and snug, not too tight not too loose.

12secSS is correct. Spend a little extra for peace of mind. I have a Simpson Voyager #810, Snell SA2000 rated. The price is reasonable at $350.

Thanks guys. I don't race much, so I don't think it is neccessary to spend soo much on one. I get your point. I won't skimp too much.
