Default Drag Racing in COLD weather.

I know that cooler air is good. But for some reason i remember or think i remember reading somewhere that if its too cold out you can start breaking parts on the car. Is that true or was it just my imagination? TIA

I could see that happening if the car wasn't up to operating temperature before racing. Cool weather is when the cars really come alive as long as they can hook up. The cooler the air going into the engine the better. The cold also greatly affects the track surface. Here in Indiana, the Tuesday night street legal drags at Indianapolis Raceway Park (Home of the "Big Go") switches to the 1/8 during the last two or three Tuesday nights in October if the temps get down far enough. I think if it gets into the low 50's or colder they keep it at 1/8 mile racing. Plus, we have a lot of moisture/humidity in our air that settles on the surface in the evening/night hours.

If you plan to go to track (Cecil) on a very cold day, it's best to make sure you ethier hotlap the car.. or if you let it sit long enough for the rear to cool... do a coupe laps around the pits before heading to the staging lanes.

BTW: I raced at Cecil on days that they couldn't keep the water box from freezing over

The good thing about cold weather is your car will usually make more power and you dont have to worry about cool downs. The bad thing is the track usually doesn't hook as good. Which doesn't help when you are makin more power.

Cold weather can give you your fastest time at the track. Let the car cool down and get behind a car that leaves lots of rubber for a burnout and get in that lane. Get as close to the stage lane as possible without running your car much before your run. You may achieve your best time with this technique. This is what I like to do for a fast time. Best wishes and good luck.
