I'm good at breaking stuff. I was a destructive kid too. Imagine the destruction I could accomplish had I stayed a nitrous junkie!

So what's the verdict. Hole the block? Maybe it's just a ringland?

My engine has been blessed. Its hole-y

We jacked it up on my trailer and took a peek. There was a chunk of block missing from the passenger side, with a nice big 2" hole in its place. The chunk was still laying on top of the starter. Looking inside the hole, we can still see the piston/rod intact and still in place. Weird.

We won't know any exact details until we tear the motor down completely. This probably will not happen until the end of December when I have some free time.

Until then, MTI and I will be discussing some future engine ideas for the next go-round. I'd like to have at least 700 rwhp with a power adder.

If I did not know better, that sounds like a straight out structural block failure. Certainly not a piece of rod or piston through the block from what you described. I could see something like that happening if someone sprayed around 2000 RPM or something like that, but not on a lazy all motor pass. Weird.

Best of luck getting a new motor Tony.

Greg

Hmm, I doubt ther was enough stress on the block to cause it just to crack like that unless it was previously damaged. Hard to say until it gets torn down and inspected. I bet Tony will be staying away from sleeves on his next motor and fill in the void with a healthy dose of the good stuff

Best of luck Tony, hope you are back in the pilot's seat soon.

Just curious how many miles were on this block. Is this the 'experiment' block I've read about in the past? Kinda scary. Good luck and I hope you're up and running soon.

Great times on those 18s. Don't feel bad for Tony, this gives him an excuse for more power.

If you came out to CA you would be running those times on slicks. Your 18's are almost equivalent to ET Streets on our local tracks. If you think I am exagerating ask Tom the Roofer.

I am sorry to hear about the motor. Seems like a rather castrophic failure. I bet you lost a rod bolt. I can't imagine you snapped a forged rod NA.

Sorry to hear about your block Tony It's nice to see you run in what I consider to be the most challenging type of drag racing, true street trim with full exhaust and non-DOT tires. I still can't imagine 1.9x 60' times on an 18" street tire though.....awesome driving! How did you launch?

To answer your question though the fastest I have personally seen is 10.87 @ 137 MPH.

Of course my goal is just to get into the high 11's with street tires but I have to figure out traction first...at least my new clutch is in

Sorry about the bad new Tony, but at least you had some fun before it happened. On the bright side, you can just put a bigger motor in for your Xmas gift to youself! Hope everything works out for the best Tony!

Sorry to hear that! Hope you get it ready by spring break.
By what you discribed I'm just wondering...
A C5R block has added ribs on the outside to strengthen it. Could this be another weak point with sleeved stock blocks?

The chunk of block that we found had a scuff kinda shaped like the head of a bolt hitting it.

Unfortunately, it was one of my earlier passes and I gave it too much throttle afterwards and spun all the way thru 2nd and 3rd. Only ran an 11.55 on that pass. I was basically slipping the Cartek clutch out, trying to hold the rpm around 2800-3000 rpm steadily until I felt the weight transfer. The front HAL shocks work wonders, even on street tires. I also ran a completely full tank of gas to try and weigh down the rear a bit more.

In an LS1? I think Colonel ran a time like that, but it was on Nittos.
