Default dragging Z for 1st time ever, help

I have a 1998 Z28 M6 that I am taking to the drag strip to put a coworker's 2002 Mustang GT Convertible M5 in its place. Both cars are effectively stock. I am looking for advice on RPM shift points and techniques.

A friend had a computer program that says that the shift points should be consistently around 5900 RPM, The max RPM is 6000 however right. Is this where the rev limiter is set to.

It is my understanding that I should finish in 4th as well. Any thoughts.

Should I bring the RPMs up to like 1800 and then dump the clutch on the green light. I haven't driven my car all winter and I forget where the GSC tires will break loose. I need help from experienced Z28/SS racers. Thanks!

btw, I HAVE to win this race or I will never live it down. We have been talking smack for weeks now and lots of work people will be there. It is of the utmost importance.

Other racing techniques will also be happily accepted (like how to stage best). He has the advantage of familiarity with the mustang as it is his daily driver, but I have only driven the car about 1000 miles last year before parking it. I don't have traction control.

It is now for honor... Help me use the force.

I never had GSC's so I can't say for sure about your launch RPM, but 1800 sounds reasonable. I did around 2k with my RSA's. Stock rev limiter is 6200rpm. One thing to be really careful on is the tach lags badly in first gear, you may want to shift as early as 5500-5600 in first and then a bit later in 2nd and 3rd. Avoid the water box at all costs! Give your tires a quick spin, but not a full burnout. You may also want to air your front tires up a bit, but don't go over 40 psi. Also lower the pressure in your rears, but I wouldn't go below 25.

Before you race, watch other cars! Look for where they stage and also look for where the finish line is. Slowly roll up when staging. I come to a stop when the first yellow lights up and then creep forward to light the second light. Go on the third yellow if running a standard .500 tree.

And most of all have fun!

Just leave from an idle if it's your first time at the track, if you leave the clutch in too long, trying to leave at 2000 rpm, your gonna burn your clutch and your night will be ruined. (from experience). leave from an idle and find out how much your car/tires/track can take gradually. You kind of seem to be overthinking this too <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> just take off and shift, your car is gonna beat him by at least two lengths. have a good time!!

I know what you mean about burning the clutch. I didn't get off it fast enough once during my 1st attempted burnout and the car smelled for a while (doh). When one dumps the clutch, do you slip your foot off the pedal and let it pop up on its own to avoid getting off of it too slow and burning it?

Right before the light turns green should the clutch petal be in to the point just before it grabs to reduce the throw of the clutch and reaction time.

how about fuel additives to boost the octane. I believe the tank should be 1/4 full of premium 93 octane but not sure about octane booster. Would you guys call doing this fair?

You wanna leave on the last yellow. I would bring the clutch up to the point where almost engages to save the clutch and to get moving right away. I wouldn't do a fast clutch drop. Instead a quick one and at the same time squeeze the gas don't slam it. Try to be smooth as to not shock the tires. I would take the front swaybar off too so you get good weight transfer.
