Default A/C Removal Need help please

Hey guys I was wondering if one of you guys could tell me how to remove my A/C system. Things like how do I get thr freon out of the system? All the stuff I can take out for weight reduction? If I have to plug any lines off after removing the system? This is all coming out of a 1999 Camaro SS. Thanks for your help. And would just like to say you guys do great work on here for helping people out

Dan

The AC is a simple bolt off. First, take a rag and cover the pressure valve due to the air being COLD. Depressurize the system by stabbing the vavle on the metal canister by the battery and keep relieving pressure until it's all out. From there, everythings 13mm, 18, and 19mm sockets. Simple removal. You'll also eliminate your AC accessory belt form behind your main drive belt.

There really isnt much to it. To discharge the freon just release the set plumbing line set screw very very slowly from your condensor(upper or lower). Let it bleed out over a period of time on its own. When that is done you will be able to freely remove all the hardware from the system. Your condensor, can, plumbing and compressor. It all goes pretty easy. But be warned. One day when you go to put it all back you are going to have aluminum dust all in the system from where it broke down due to moisture. The only way to save the parts back up in your dash, is to pull a vacume and cap with a + vacume pull. If you are going to keep your a/c parts to reinstall when you sell the car, they will go to **** as well if steps arent taken to relieve and prevent moisture from decaying the internals. These are things I have come to live with, and guess I am just going to keep the car untire one of us dies.

DO NOT LET THE FREON OUT!!!!!!!!!!!! What the hell you people thinkin! This is bad for the Ozone, I hate getting sunburned! Go to ANY CERTIFIED shop and they will will recover it with an EPA approved racovery machine for free, freon costs big money, It can be resold! If you were local, I would do it for you, I am certified. This is also against the law. It's your call, but it would be the "good" thing to do.

You think street racing is legal? Do you think drinking under age is legal? I dont think either is, but they sure as hell are done everyday. You think this guy has time to take out of his day to go empty his A/C system just because he is breaking a law no one would ever catch him doing? If you are so worried about the ozone stop drag racing, stop the fleets of diesel big rigs running down the road, stop the big business refineries. Emptying ones freon from the a/c system doesnt do enough damage to rank on the scale of things. I hope that race car of your has cats on it nature boy.

Thanks for the help Xfactor_pitbulls and Dear John, so ther is nothing that needs to be plugged up, just unbolt all of the hardware and remove the A/C stuff. Also is the A/C condenser hard to take out?

Also I didn't me to start a fight in here about the O-Zone crap but I don't think the amount of freon in my A/C system is going to hurt anything.

the condenser just slides out after the lines are taken off of it. I found the hardest part of the removal was one of the 2 lower mounting bolts on the compressor and the bolt that holds the two lines on back of the compressor. they just take a little more time to get out, nothing big

I was looking under the hood yesterday pondering AC removal as well. It looked to me like the ac was driven by the main serpantine belt...

But you guys are saying that the ac belt has another pulley that I can just remove? I just leave the main accessory belt in place?

Yeah the AC belt is driven on a seperate pulley with the compressor. Just look under your car and you will see a seperate belt for the AC and you will see the compressor. Goodluck.

Last time I checked, 1993 was the last year F-bodies got Freon (R12).

R134a is known as the "ozone-friendly" refrigerant.

I don't condone venting to atmosphere... but the connections do get cold, and it can spray oil everywhere.

LOL, I was pretty sure that nobody had freon anymore, but I wasn't going to say anything. So calm down enviro-man... nobody's threatening your environment.

Seriously, though, vent it in an open area so you don't breathe it in...

I couldnt imagine pulling out the A/C in a daily driver. You are in Texas bro, I cant fathom having to commute during the middle of the summer with no A/C. Getting all sweaty and **** going to work. Hence the beater and the truck. Both have great air.

No this is not a daily driver as far as to work and what not, but it does see a lot of street time, I just never use it so I figure why not take it out.
