Default Installed grant wheel, my thoughts...

Used kit 3196 I believe..

It was pretty straight forward...

One thing I was not happy with was the amount of teeth that were overlapping from the steering shaft and the new adpater for the new wheel.. I've seen splines like these strip before and didn't want that to happen in the car (never seen it happen on a steering shaft thougH)..

So I broke away some of the yellow plasitc on the shaft to allow the new adapter to slide on further.. worked very well..

New problem now is that the black ring/bezel sits too deep and makes contact with the steering column...

So I had to use 2 washers between the steering bezel and the adapter plate (2 washers on each screw)...

Worked like a charm... full thread contact and no rubbing/contact.

Now.. I didn't hook up the horn.. all that mess looked way too complicated.. I'll just rig up a button or remove the horn completely..

Also, there are 2 sets of wires that go through the column, one for steering wheel controls and one for air bag.. a yellow and a grey coated set of wires.. I clipped one and saved the other. I routed the other wires through the horn hole and into the steering wheel. I plan to use these wires to connect to 2 buttons on my steering wheel. Left button for line lock, right for trans brake.. should work very well and avoid having excess wires dangling from the column.

Great write up Magnus, i like the idea of using the factory wiring for the line lock and trans brake, very clean. BUT, how could you be able to wire all of that up as well as your whole car and you couldnt hook up the one red wire to the Grant horn button with a ground(2 wires)?? Or did you not get a horn button with the setup. As far as the horn is concerned, you could just clip the red wire from the horn contacts, it is 12v constant, then you just wire it to the button, and i believe the button makes contact with the column for ground.

Clint,

I do have the horn parts.. I was just getting confused with all the hoopla.. and If I used the hole in the adapter kit for the horn wire thing, I don't think I would have been able to snake in the existing wires for line lock and trans brake..

meh.. horn weighs a couple lbs.. who am I going to honk at anyway?.. HONK HONK.. hey dude how bout you line me up in the water box ay? HOOONNNKK... meh.

did a grant on my car about 1.5 years ago now. was super easy.

we had to buy a pile of adapter kits to find the right one at pep boys.

it ended up being the last one made for GMC trucks..something like 1978-1985...that the one you used?

another trick for folks doing this...ls1 waterpump bolts work perfect for the bolt holes when using the puller to get the stock wheel off..

well, the airbag will basically just pull out of the center of the wheel so you can get at the area you need to work on to pull the wheel off.

i don't have my horn hooked up either...mixed feelings on that with all the street driving i do, i think this winter i will find a way to get that working again before some old lady backs into me with her crown vic.
