Question Trailor mounted winches

What are you guys using for trailor mounted winches? (Brand, size/lbs. rating, etc.) For a winter project I`d like to fab up a winch mount and a battery tray on my 16` open. I did a search but didn`t come up with much. Thanks for any input.

I use a Superwinch 4000lbs. That should be plenty for a race car.

What would be the smallest rating that would be usable to pull a car up onto an open hauler?

Thats what I figured. I ordered a Superwinch 2300 lb from Jegs and when I got it, it looked kinda small. Its hard to tell their size by looking at photos. I'll see if I can return it and get a larger one.

Thumbs up

Thanks for the reply MADMAN. Nine Ball, I was wondering the same thing. My car weighs around 3200lbs and my trailer has a beaver tail. I seen a chart by a winch manufacturer once that graphed load vs. angle once but can`t find it. MADMAN`s suggestion of min. 2500 sounds about right though. If anyone would know, he would!

I bought a 3500# Superwinch for my 18' open trailer. It works great and seems to be plenty strong enough. It sure makes loading a broken car much easier than pushing it on a trailer.

i would buy the 4K lbs rating. ofcourse you dont need to pull 4K lbs, but you never want to push a wench harder than you need. we just got a new 26' enclosed and that truely is a must to have! lol. hard to push the sucker in there.

I have a heavy duty hand crank on my car trailer.
It takes a little effort on heavier cars.

Out of curiosity, what kind/brand/type/etc?(steel cable, nylon strap type?)? That thought crossed my mind to save some money.

I've got a Superwinch 4500# in a carmate 24' enclosed. Works good but we should have got the #6000. Our car is heavy though. Seems like the 4500 strains.

I'd have to go down to the field and look. It is an old thing we dug up somewhere. It's a gear reduction and looks like the ones used on boat trailers with 1/4 steel cable. It has a removeable handle. You'd be surprised how much you can pull with it. I will take pics if you like. We made a receiver type hitch to mount it with. This way we can remove it when we want by simply pulling a pin.
