Default Breaking spot welds?

For a bit of weight reduction I'm in the proces of removing some of the excess brackets / mounts that I'm not using anymore, i.e. where heat shields and seatbelts used to be. My problem is that I don't have a good method for breaking and removing the spot welds.

For example, I removed one small two-weld bracket from underneath the car using a hammer, chisel, and prybar. One spot weld broke and stayed on the car, the other broke and ripped a small hole clear through to the carpet. Not exactly what I wanted, and now I get to play "patch".

So how would you guys do it? Hammer + Chisel? Prybar? Dremel? Angle grinder? Forget about it entirely?

Air hammer works best and a angle grinder or cut off wheel. Grind the weld a little then air hammer away. They come right off.

There are spot weld cutters, which are just a special type of drill bit. Eastwood (a sponsor) carries them.

I'd like a method that doesn't leave a hole in the panel beneath the bracket. Would the cutter do that?

Yes the cutter is a small drill bit with a cutter at the top that eats the top of the weld! Go with the air hammer! My friends own a boady shop so for realy cheap we blasted them of. Takes only like 1-2 minutes.

I am sure a local body shop would remove them for real cheap. Or any good fab/roll cage shop has these tools.

Or you can get them at Walmart for around 25-30 bucks. An air Chisle works wonders

I used a cut-off wheel. I went through 4 packs to cut everything off, but I had a nice little pile of scrap metal when it was all said and done.

air hammer, angle grinder, cutoff wheel...it's very simple. just take your time and you won't have any issues.
