is an upper PHB needed for my setup?
hey all......
i was wondering if the upper phb is of much use with a full aftermarket rearend and suspension setup? i will be putting in a Billingsley Fab9 with anti roll bar, Wolfe dbl. adj. LCA's and PHB, BMR X-treme T/A, and dbj. adj. shocks and appropriate springs for drag racing, and eventually a set of wheelie bars. i plan on running 8's by next year, and hopefully 10's this year. i don't want to compramise safety, i just want to know if it's needed or just extra weight.
thanks,
Dave

When we remove it from my car, I am going to have my father in law re-inforce the PHR frame bracket. That "Upper" PHR serves as a lateral support for the PHR Frame bracket under hard cornering, but can flex under hard launches (more than OEM intended).

I'm not guessing on this, it's a fact.
Since he is talking about a high HP/TQ combo, if it does a big wheelie
the car will NOT go straight which can be dangerous if he rides it out.
I thought I should warn him.
But hey, no one listens to me anyway.

Are you going to an aftermarket lower panhard bar? If that's the case, then you won't need the upper. If you're talking about the stock one's, I'd leave it in.
<<< big wheelie car, aftermarket lower PHB, no upper PHB, Madman suspension tuning = straight launches

not talking about high 10 second cars?
I ran 9's and it's a little crooked, not much, but a little.
In still photos I can see the passenger tirebuckling under
and the drivers tire buckle outward.
I didn't figure the problem out until I noticed my drag bar had slid over
and my drivers tire actually hit the wheelwell.
When you do 100 wheelies and you see nothing but sky, the last thing I
want is for this guy to come down and be in the other lane or land on the wall.
Do you think I'm just making this **** up?
YOU have never even ran 10's in your car, you needed a driver, so
stop acting like a know-it-all. Ok?
Thanks

I have run with and without it. Seeing you can pretty much bend that metal by hand with neither bar attached its hard to argue that it would bend without that support if there was a a big side load. If the rear was perfectly straight in the car and the rear tires were the exact same diameter you wouldnt think the rear would try to push off the side but things are seldom perfectly square.
That bar weighs like 4lbs, on a street driven car if you slide into something it wont take that much to buckle that flimsy sheetmetal the PHB attaches to on the frame. At the very least put a bolt and some tubing as a fake bushing in the upper hole if you are going to take it off to box it a little better.
wish I could pull wheelies like Sean

1.27 60ft here without the brace. That was in a 3460lb car at Thunder also.
Most all the other 60's are 1.33 tripping the lights with the rear tires. I don't think it is necc and I remove it from all the cars that I work on. Multiple 5 sec cars in the 1/8.

sounds good guys, and thanks for watching out for my safety there Sean. i stated above what my setup is, and i just ordered the Billingsley Fab9 with his anti-roll bar and wheelie bar brackets just in case. but i would love to enter a wheel stand comp. that's held every Nov. at one of my local tracks, and obviously going straight as an arrow is a MUST! so, thanks again for the replies, oppinions, and passing on your experiences.

Dave
