Default Free Tech info inside

The info is free and I'm hoping that it will get out to a lot of folks.

Many times you hear folks ranting about the Tech requirements at the track and the money for safety items they have to put in their cars. Safety can be you and your car's best friend. I suggest instead of doing the minimum, consider what you can do to protect yourself and your investment.

This past Wed afternoon I installed a fire surpression system in my car (driver's compartment and engine bay). Went to the track that night and needless to say I encountered my very first engine fire as a result of a fuel leak. I've been racing since the mid 80s and never had this Fortunately the system worked awesome and only a few wires were toast. All is back and running well. I've always taken safety seriously and hope this little story may motivate others to do so as well.

Cool, glad you got out of it without any real damage. What kind of set up did you install? Combination Halon/CO2, just one of them, or something else?

Glad tosee that nothing more serious. Did you get to make any full passes? I guess I had better start looking into something soon. Still don't have an engine though

Thanks David. Naw, first pass out of the box. Hopefully tomorrow night if the weather holds I'll be back on a points night. That's usually good prep night so it should be fun.

I'm curious Eric, how exactly does this system work and how much is it? Is it like automatic or what?

Devon,

There are several types of system on the market. The one I got was a Halon 10 lbs with pull activiation and I set it up with 3 nozzles. I installed my "T-type" pull handle in the center console just to the right back area of the shifter.

Halon is a gas the basically exhausts the oxygen in the area it's sprayed. No oxygen, no fire. Yes you'll have to hold your breath, but I think that a little easier than the alternative.

There are auto activiation units that go off at 150 deg, but that could be a mild summer day here The system was just over $500.

I got mine direct from a manufacture that's local to us (actually closer to you). Good folks who treated me right.

Definately a good investment. $500 well spent IMHO. I've got a 10lb halon system in my POS. 1 nozzle pointed at me, 2 at the motor. Haven't had to pull it, but came close. Encountered an oil flash fire on the dyno right after putting the car together a few years ago, just installed the Halon myself. Fire was out just as fast as it started, so no discharge.

On the track, you never know.

Any extinguisher is a good idea.

30 minute install including the time it takes to open the box and get organized. I'll shoot you their number on a PM.

Matt, I almost freaked when I saw it melted some of my 2 step harness wiring. Fortunately it was repairable. First words for that were, "Oh *$%! Harlan's retired!"

Hey Matt, how many rpm under full flash on the t-brake would be a good starting point on the 2-step?

Good point to make Eric. I've always had an extinguisher in my car, but I might look into something a little more advanced in the future. Thanks for the tip!

Derek,

Another nice feature is that it leaves zero residue.

Never a bad thing Eric. You always feel bad for anyone having to clean up after getting the powder
