Default Removing Air Filter

I've heard of a few people gaining up to 2 tenths and 2 mph in the 1/4 by taking out the air filter and I was wondering, how safe is it to do that? I would certainly love to pick up 2 tenths and 2 mph by just taking my filter out, but how much damage can be caused be a pebble getting sucked up? And how likely is it that it would actually happen. Would it be a wise decision for me to take the filter out while I'm at the track?

And I have a descreened MAF if that matters

I would never take out the air filter. I don't believe Marco on his 2 mph & 2 tenths either.

One pebal sucked in = disaster. Get a good free flowing filter K&N or an AirHog

If you want REALLY good flowing filter. use an aftermarket filter. except clean it out and don't put oil in it. they flow ALOT better like that, BUT i would only use this filter for the track seeing as how the oil is what catches all the fine dust particles and such that you encounter while daily driving.

I have a K&N, I just wanted to make sure it wasn't worth it to pull it all together. How should I clean my filter for the track? Just water?

I yank my filter at the track only sometimes. I still have the MAF screen in, otherwise I wouldn't do it. I've found I gain 1mph in the 1/4, no improvement in ET.

Has anyone tried that panty hose trick where you stretch that over the air box in place of the filter?

Well I know it helps.I went back to back runs with no filter and then fram. Almost an identical 60' and it was a tenth faster.

I never run a filter at the track, and I have no MAF screen. It's impossible for a pebble to go all the way up the ramair, thru the lid, thru the TB and into the combustion chamber. I'm sorry, but it ain't happening. If anyone has ever had it happen, please speak up. It won't give you 2 tenths and 2 mph for sure, but every little bit counts.

OK, I had an experience at the track Sunday that was directly related to this thread. Things CAN get sucked up into your intake w/o a filter. I yanked my filter as usual and make 2 passes back to back 8.56@85 1/8,13.16@106 1/4, 8.56@85 1/8, 13.17@106 1/4. Then I line up for my third pass, at the top end my car falls flat on its face. I pick up my timeslip and I ran 13.3@101 (forgot the 1/8), pull back into the pits and there is a leaf covering my MAF screen. I make another run and pop the filter back in 8.58@85 1/8,13.20@106 1/4. My 60 fts were all in the 2.0 range and my car is really consistent, so I think this shows the small difference in restriction. BTW, I run a Fram Airhog filter. I would never yank the filter if I did not have the MAF screen in.
