Default First time at the track - very disappointed

Well I went to US 131 dragstrip today for my first time drag racing. I have a 98 Z28 A$ w/ 2.73 gears, and all stock motor and trans except for cutout and and air lid. I was expecting to run high 13s, especially since it was cold out. I did what I thought I was supposed to at the track. I roasted the tires to get them nice and sticky. I then got to the starting line and got left it in OD and floored it. I got excellent traction on all three runs. My times sucked though. Here they are:

1st run:
2.45 60'
9.33 1/8 at 81 mph
14.10 1/4 at 102 mph

2nd run:
2.12 60'
9.06 1/8 at 77.88 mph
14.05 1/4 at 98 mph

3rd run:
2.16 60'
9.09 1/8 at 78.77 mph
14.04 1/4 at 99 mph

The first run actually seemed like the only run where the car ran right. On both the 2nd and 3rd runs my car started sputtering all the way down the second 1/2 of the track. It seemed to run ok until I hit about 60 mph and then it just started sputtering all the way down the track Any ideas on what may have caused this? I was running 93 octane. I never get any sort of hesitation when I floor it on the highway. It seemd as if the car did not like the full out race where I kept it floored for so long. It seems to be ok with the short term WOT, but maybe it is running too rich or lean at long term WOT runs. Well I should also mention I have 78,000 miles on my car. Perhaps a bad fuel pump? Spark plugs? Any ideas???? Thanks. To make the situation worse I lost my last run to a WRX I'm sure he loved that.

check engine light? there is definetly something wrong, although my best out of a stock 2.73 car was a 13.8 @ 102 i think, then it ran in the 14's the rest of the time.

i think the stock thermostat does NOT help at all. after i got the thermostat/fan switch plus lid and ftra i ran a 13.4 @ 104mph.

sputtering could be alot of things, good luck with it im sure you'll get it figured out.

I would have went today if I had known any Camaro people would be there. I'm about 25 minutes from the track. When's the last time your car had a tune up? Plugs, wires, fuel filter? With 78K all of that stuff should be replaced. If it was a fuel pump it would be running bad all the time. How much gas did you have? As for burnout I never burn them off much. I roll through the water and dump the clutch and spin them for a few seconds, then push in the clutch and roll up to the line. I have an M6 so my techniques are going to be a bit different. Last I ran there was during Berger's drag day Labor Day weekend. Consistent 13.1-13.2 runs all day.

almost forgot- try resetting the pcm

1. turn key to "on" position

2. pop hood and remove "pcm bat" and "pcm ign" fuses from box under hood.

3. turn car off

4. replace fuses and start car.

Practice, Practice, Practice!!!!

My A4, 2.73 gear-equipped 'bird ran a best of 13.55 @ 105 mph with nothing more than a air lid and Dynomax muffler.

The service engine soon light is not on. As far as a tune up I have not done one yet. I will try a tune up and then see if that helps. I am starting to wonder if maybe the issue was that I cleaned the MAF sensor right before I raced. I used a q-tip and electronics cleaner. That may have thrown off the air/fuel ratio. I will reset the PCM and then run it again (off the track) and see if it sputters from 60-100 mph. If it does run good I will most likely run it one more time this month. I will send you a PM GETGONE next time I decide to go. Thanks for the feedback. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

q tip in the maf sensor????! you need a new maf if you touched the little wires inside of it, those things are very delicate. im tellin ya get a new maf and see if that is the problem i'd bet it is, you can get them cheap from any junkyard (probably 50$). next time just spray the electronics cleaner through the maf, that is all that is needed

I took my all stock '98 TA to the track for the first time a couple of weeks ago and ran a 13.9, a 13.8, and a 13.7. It's got 3.42 gears so that helps. My top speed was 100-101 mph.

With stock tires you don't need to "roast them" at all. Just a quick little brush-off will do (and no water).

Were you hitting the rev limiter?? Getting your shift points and/or rev limiter adjusted will help with that.

I was not hitting the rev limiter. The car shifted good, but it just started puking on the 2nd half of the race. I did read in several threads that you can use a q-tip on the MAF wires. How do I know for sure if the MAF is now bad? Is there anything else that may have caused the sputtering??? Thanks.

I would put some NGK TR55 plugs and new high quality wires on that car and see if the stuttering stops. If the MAF sensor is damage it would prob flash a SES. Change those plugs and wires and try to lower those 60' times. Ice the intake manifold, lower the tire pressure in the rear and max it out in the front.

I forgot to add, Sleeper is right about the Temp. You have to keep the temp down and a 160 thermostat and making the fans come on earlier helps a lot. A hot car will pull timing.

Have the car tuned and get the MAF deleted.

Well I went back to the track on Saturday and here are the new #s.

60' 2.09
1/8 ET 9.01 at 79.76 mph
1/4 ET 13.84 at 101.99 mph

I am pretty happy w/ those numbers. Thanks for everybody's help.

I just got a Fuddle 3400/2.1 stall so I can't wait to see what that does for me
